Lazarus: Who is Sutton’s killer? Details from the Prime Video series explored

The mystery of Sutton’s death forms one of the main storylines in Prime Video’s Lazarus. The horror-thriller series revolves around Joel “Laz” Lazarus, a forensic psychiatrist who returns to his family home after the mysterious death of his father, Jonathan.

As he starts to see Jonathan’s visions, Joel gets involved in the world of cold murder cases that have happened in the town. This also leads him to investigate the murder of his sister, Sutton, who was killed 25 years ago, but her murderer was never caught.

As Joel delves into the case, the identity of the killer is revealed by the end of Lazarus. Sam Olsen, a schoolmate of Joel and Sutton who was obsessed with the latter as a teenager, was responsible for her death.

Lazarus: Who killed Sutton?

Sutton’s schoolmate Sam Olsen killed her in 1998. As a teenager, Sam was obsessed with Sutton while she was in a relationship with Billy. Sam’s obsession made him cross all the boundaries as he used to intrude into her home to take pictures of her personal stuff.

During the school prom night in 1998, Sutton saw Billy kissing her sister Jenna and was disappointed. She left the party and reached home early, only to find Sam there, who had yet again sneaked into her room to take a toy dog.

After a confrontation between the two, Sam forced himself on her. While Sutton started to scream, Sam hit her head against the edge of the bed, which led to her death. He then left the crime scene and kept the murder a secret from everyone for years, until Joel figured out the truth in Lazarus Episode 5.

How did Joel find Sutton’s killer?

Sam initially became a suspect in Sutton’s murder. However, the authorities gave him a clean chit as there was no evidence against him. In Lazaurs, Joel and Sam ended up having a conversation about Sutton. Sam once again claimed that he did not kill Sutton. He then showed Joel a toy dog, claiming that Sutton had given it to him as a child.

Learning how close his sister was to Sam, Joel also started believing that he had no involvement in her death. However, things changed later when Joel and Jenna watched a VHS footage of the night Sutton went to the prom. The footage showed that the toy dog was in Sutton’s room just before she was murdered.

This made Joel realize that Sam had been lying to him. He then got an arrest warrant issued against him, but the authorities could not find him. Knowing that he liked to go to a fishing spot, Joel went to the place and found Sam there.

He then confronted Sam, who vehemently lied again and said that he was in their home to get the toy dog when Sutton suddenly entered and tried to get intimate with him. He claimed that he did not want to get physical with her and accidentally smashed her head while protecting himself.

However, Joel knew that Sam was lying again. The two then got into a physical fight until Sam’s son Aiden, who was also at the scene, stopped them. The police then arrived and arrested Sam. However, his actions had already done great damage, as Sutton’s death had pushed Jonathan toward insanity, leading him to become a serial killer.
