Doctor Who Season 15 Episode 4 introduced a twist that no one saw coming. Conrad Clark, the seemingly friendly love interest of Ruby, turned out to be a villain and a conspiracy theorist who gave a tough time to The Doctor.
The betrayal left fans shocked, and actress Millie Gibson, who plays Ruby, has now revealed that the show’s cast was equally stunned by the plot. Talking about the lead Ncuti Gatwa's reaction on reading the script, Gibson revealed in an interview with ScreenRant that she will never forget the way he gasped on that twist:
“And we were just turning the pages until I heard Ncuti's reaction. Oh, my gosh, I'll never forget it. The gasp he gasped was just insane. I was obsessed! I hope everyone else has the reaction that Ncuti had.”
Doctor Who Season 15’s Conrad twist left the cast shocked
Millie Gibson added that when she first read the script of Doctor Who Season 15 Episode 4, she was heartbroken, but at the same time, she was excited to find out how viewers would react to the surprising twist:
“Sad! Oh, my gosh. When I read that script, it was like, 'Okay, just rip my heart out of my chest.' I'm so excited for the viewers to see that twist, though.”
Talking about the experience of filming the sequence where Conrad reveals his true intentions, Gibson said that actor Jonah Hauer-King’s performance made it a memorable moment:
“But I was as heartbroken as Ruby was. I remember when we did that scene, that switch was great! Jonah [Hauer-King] plays Conrad so goofy that you never see it coming.”
“'He's Prince Eric! He will never betray us.' That's what you think. Jonah just plays it beautifully. That speech where he is like, 'I've had to listen to your tedious piano solos!' Ugh, it's perfect.”
In the Doctor Who episode Lucky Day, Conrad seems kind and sweet at first. He forms a romantic relationship with Ruby, who starts to trust him. However, it is eventually revealed that Conrad was lying the whole time. He faked an alien attack to make UNIT look bad and tried to turn the public against them.
The Doctor later visits Conrad in jail and tells him about his future: how he is going to die alone at the age of 49. However, Mrs. Flood releases him from prison at the end, hinting that his sinister motives would continue in Doctor Who.
The fifteenth series of the sci-fi series has been written by Russell T Davies and stars Ncuti Gatwa as The Doctor, Millie Gibson as Ruby Sunday, and Belinda Chandra as the new companion, Varada Sethu.
Doctor Who airs new episodes on BBC One and Disney+ on Saturdays.
