Season 1 of English Teacher proved that suburban high schools aren't just about pop quizzes and parent meetings. They're also packed with cringe-worthy crushes, romances, and teachers drowning their sorrows at the local gay bar. Created by and starring Brian Jordan Alvarez, FX's comedy-drama follows Evan Marquez, a decent but overwhelmed titular English Teacher. He spends as much energy juggling his personal disasters as he does school politics.

The first season delivered eight episodes (20 minutes each), with its deadpan humor and ensemble cast. But everything blew up in the finale. Evan's love life was a tangle. Gwen and Markie's flirting was impossible to miss.

Let's revisit English Teacher Season 1 so you're ready when the new season drops on September 25 at 9 pm!

Evan and Harry meet again in the English Teacher Season 1 finale, but how?

Evan is torn between two men. On one side is Malcolm, played by Jordan Firstman, Evan's on-and-off partner. On the other hand is Harry, aka the substitute teacher, whom Evan can't stop thinking about. Earlier, Evan and Harry shared a kiss. Then Harry vanished without explanation, and Evan was confused.

Things came to a head when Malcolm threw Evan a surprise birthday party at a gay bar. The party featured skimpy outfits and racy videos playing on big screens - definitely not a low-key affair. Then, the English Teacher, Harry, showed up! Evan confronted him and said that things were "nice until you ghosted me."

Malcolm (who'd been scheming to win Evan back) nudged Evan toward Harry at one point. But after getting advice from his friend Markie and hearing Malcolm's speech, Evan made his choice. He walked past Harry, pulled Malcolm close, and kissed him. For now, Evan and Malcolm are giving it another shot.

Gwen, Markie, and the breakup that wasn’t

Meanwhile, Gwen (Stephanie Koenig) was dealing with relationship issues. At the party, she told Evan she'd broken up with Nick earlier that day.

Enter Markie, the gym teacher who's liked Gwen all season!

Seeing her upset and singing karaoke, he tried to make a move.

But his advice backfired when he told Gwen to "let people be who they are." It made her rethink dumping Nick. Instead of starting anew with Markie, she went back to Nick. But will they stay together next season?

What to expect from English Teacher Season 2?

English Teacher Season 2 is coming back bigger and bolder. Instead of the usual eight episodes, fans will get ten this time around. All episodes drop on Hulu starting September 26, right after the FX premiere the night before.

Our favorite rebellious teacher, Evan Collins (played by Benjamin Evan), will continue challenging school policies. Expect real-world issues like climate debates, pandemic rules, military recruiters on campus, and student cell phone bans. His relationship with Malcolm won't get simpler either, now that Malcolm's left his job at the school but keeps getting pulled into Evan's activist causes.

The whole main cast is returning: Jessica Alvarez as the no-nonsense vice principal, Rachel Koenig as the idealistic new teacher, Patton as the sarcastic history teacher, Christopher as the overwhelmed superintendent, and Emmy-winning Enrico Colantoni as the exhausted Principal Moretti.

Critics already praised the first season, and with a near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes score, expectations are high for this fall's return. Whether you're invested in Evan and Malcolm's rocky romance, find yourself sympathizing with Moretti, or just love the staff room banter....get ready. The bell's about to ring!
