While Starz’s romantic fantasy series Outlander is concluding with Season 8 (in early 2026), the story is far from over. Author Diana Gabaldon’s world is expanding with Outlander: Blood of My Blood, a prequel spin-off series.

The historical show featured an epic love story between a Scottish Highlander from the 18th century and a time-traveling English woman, Claire, from the 20th century. The beautiful tale of romance and intrigue will conclude with Season 8.

However, fret not! The show’s universe is expanding with a prequel show, which will follow love stories between Jamie and Claire’s parents in two different periods. In addition, the early 18th-century setting will also feature many returning characters from Outlander, who will be portrayed as their younger versions.

Outlander: Blood of My Blood is set to premiere on Starz on August 8, 2025.

More on this in our story.

Outlander: Blood of My Blood: Main returning characters (and their actors)

Excited fans are wondering if some of the original cast will show up in Outlander: Blood of My Blood. While this is impossible, as the prequel series is set in two different (and earlier) periods, the spin-off show will surely feature many characters from the parent show in their prime and youthful days. Here is a list of returning characters in the prequel:

1) Jamie Roy as Brian Fraser

Starting strong with Jamie’s father, Jamie Roy will make his debut in the Outlander universe as Brian Fraser. While actor Andrew Whipp made brief appearances as Brian in the parent show, Roy will lead the spin-off show. After witnessing Jamie’s epic love story with Claire, fans will get to see his father’s love story in the early 18th century with Ellen McKenzie.

2) Rory Alexander as Murtagh Fitzgibbons Fraser

One of the most reserved yet beloved characters from the parent show, actor Duncan Lacroix played Murtagh, Jamie’s godfather, in Outlander. Actor Rory Alexander will portray a young Murtagh in Outlander: Blood of My Blood, and fans will get to see the friendly dynamic between Jamie’s father and Murtagh. The trailer also hints at a romantic angle for Murtagh with Jocasta.

3) Sam Retford as Dougal McKenzie

Another iconic character, actor Graham McTavish flawlessly portrayed Dougal McKenzie, Jamie’s uncle, in the parent series. Sam Retford will portray the character in his prime, where he will go against his brother Colum and try to gain power over the clan after the death of their laird. Outlander: Blood of My Blood will expand on the silent rivalry between the brothers.

4) Séamus McLean Ross as Colum MacKenzie

Right behind his brother is Colum MacKenzie, played by actor Gary Lewis in Outlander. While he became the laird to his clan eventually, the prequel series will chart out Colum's struggle to power and how he managed to come into power after the death of his laird. In addition, the show will also likely expand on the origin of Colum's illness from the parent show.

5) Conor MacNeill as Ned Gowan

While Bill Paterson’s Ned Gowan only appeared in the initial seasons of Outlander, he was an important character who also helped Claire. A lawyer and legal advisor to Clan MacKenzie, Ned Gowan suggested Jamie and Claire’s marriage to save her from Black Jack Randall. Outlander: Blood of My Blood will feature a younger version of Ned, expanding on his origin story with Clan MacKenzie.

Minor returning characters in the prequel series

In addition to these characters, the spin-off show will also include:

  1. Tony Curran as Lord Lovat (originally played by Clive Russell)
  2. Terence Rae as Arch Bug (originally played by Hugh Ross)
  3. Marlow Walters as Angus Mhor (originally played by Stephen Walters)
  4. Louis O’Rourke as Rupert MacKenzie (originally played by Grant O’Rourke)
  5. Sally Messham as Mrs. Fitz, the cook (originally played by Annette Badland)
  6. Sadhbh Malin as Jocasta Cameron, ie, Aunt Jocasta (originally played by Maria Doyle Kennedy)

Catch the Outlander: Blood of My Blood premiere on Starz on August 8, 2025.
