Outlander: Blood of My Blood Episode 3 recap: Ellen's master plan strengthens the clan, and Julia makes a big sacrifice

Outlander: Blood of My Blood Episode 3 was all about Jamie and Claire's mothers struggling to survive in 18th-century Scotland. Both Ellen and Julia made bold choices and sacrifices that will have dire consequences in their lives.

While Ellen daydreams about Brian, she is given the devastating news about her betrothal to Malcolm Grant by Colum. Elsewhere, Ned Gowan introduces Henry to potential women who could aid him in finding his 'English wife'.

Outlander: Blood of My Blood Episode 3 title 'School of the Moon' comes into play with a flashback sequence where Colum and Dougal were sent on their first cattle raid without their father. However, their raid goes sideways when Dougal tries to collect a bounty from the MacDonalds, and Colum's horse throws him away, badly injuring him for life.

Outlander: Blood of My Blood Episode 3 recap: Colum and Dougal seal Ellen's fate

In Outlander: Blood of My Blood Episode 3, Colum is adamant about marrying Ellen to Malcolm Grant, as this will benefit Clan MacKenzie. She argues against the decision and even expresses her disappointment in Colum, as she truly loved him. When she talks to Dougal, he reveals that he does not trust the Grants and will not let this marriage happen if he is made the laird.

However, Jocasta reveals to Ellen that Dougal has different plans, as he has promised Ellen's hand in marriage to a Jacobite leader in return for their votes. As a Staurt supporter, Dougal is siding with the Jacobites and using Ellen to become the next laird.

Realising that both of her brothers plan to use her as bait to strengthen their positions as laird, Ellen forms a plan that will save the clan without her marriage.

Elsewhere at Castle Leathers, Brian shares Ellen's betrothal news with Simon, assuming he would likely try to stop this alliance between the Grants and the MacKenzies. However, he did not take into account that Simon would not play fair, and Brian's plan backfired when Simon hatched a plan to ruin Ellen's reputation.

Realizing that Dougal and Colum would do anything to become lairds, Ellen talks with Dougal and points out that when the time comes, the Grants will surely side with James MacKinney, the other man who’s been eyeing to become laird of the clan. She then hatches a plan with Ned Gowan and asks him to make both of her brothers follow.

The next day, at the oath-taking ceremony, both brothers arrive royally, accompanied by bagpipes. While anticipation is running high, both of them surprise everyone by announcing a joint alliance between them. Outlander: Blood of My Blood Episode 3 takes a shocking turn when both brothers pledge their loyalty to one another by kneeling on the ground. While Colum announces to rule the clan, he makes Dougal his war Chief. Dougal also promises to lead the clan during war. And just like that, Ellen strengthened the Clan once again, without having to sacrifice herself.

Outlander: Blood of My Blood Episode 3: Julia makes a big sacrifice

Back at Castle Leathers, we check in with Julia, who is still trying to dodge Simon's advances. A new problem arises when Davina realises that Julia is pregnant and asks her to abort the child. When Julia questions why Davina kept her child out of wedlock, ie, Brian, she reveals that she was only allowed to keep that child because he was Lord Lovat's son.

Davina gives her a gin ingredient and asks her to abort the child, or else Simon would do it himself. However, Julia denies being pregnant and throws the gin away. Later that night, Julia makes a bold sacrifice and Outlander: Blood of My Blood Episode 3 takes a truly tragic turn. Firstly, she writes a letter to her husband and expresses how their baby is her only hope left:

“I can’t bring myself to let go of the only piece of you I have left here, my love. So, forgive me for what I am about to do.”

The episode ends with Julia slipping into Simon's room at night and offering herself to him, to save Claire's unborn sibling and her second child.
