Outlander: Blood of My Blood Episode 8, titled "A Virtuous Woman," was probably the most heartbreaking and humiliating episode of Starz's historical drama series, where a woman was put through a virtue test, and her brothers watched in silence.
As Ellen awaited her test, Colum discussed his sister's virtue with everyone but her. He subtly warns Ned that if Ellen does not pass this exam, she will likely be killed by her brothers. He asks Ned about the Beltane festival and confirms whether Ellen was with him throughout the celebration. Ned reassures him, and Colum returns to the hall to check the preparations for Ellen's virtue exam.
Outlander: Blood of My Blood Episode 8 was also the most emotional installment of the series yet, as it finally gave us an unexpected reunion of Julia and Henry. The couple finally met at Castle Leoch during Ellen's exam. However, their reunion was short-lived, and they were parted again.
Here is the complete Outlander: Blood of My Blood Episode 8 recap.
Outlander: Blood of My Blood Episode 8 recap- Brian and Julia set out to help Ellen
At Castle Leathers, Simon informs Julia that he will be taking a two-day trip to Aberdeen to gather some magical waters that would 'rejuvenate' him (and bring his abilities in the bedchamber back). However, he makes sure to tell his son Brian that Ellen MacKenzie will undergo a test of her virtue before he leaves. As Simon marvels at the fact that Brian slept with a MacKenzie girl, he says:
“A MacKenzie, deflowered by a Fraser.''
Simon was not even bothered that Brian actually loves the said MacKenzie girl. After Simon leaves, Brian also sets out for Castle Leoch to save his 'wife'. His mother, Davina, is furious that doing such a reckless thing is basically signing your death warrant. However, Brian is adamant. Julia interferes just in time and shares a plan that will help Ellen pass her virtue test in Outlander: Blood of My Blood Episode 8. Julia prepares an elixir that will help Ellen tighten her hymen and fool the physician into thinking that she is 'virtuous'. After promising Davina that she will take care of her boy, Julia and Brian leave for Castle Leoch.
Outlander: Blood of My Blood Episode 8 recap- Ellen's virtue test
Malcolm manages to have a quiet moment with Ellen to confess that the virtue test was not his idea. His sincerity was apparent in Outlander: Blood of My Blood Episode 8, and Ellen appreciated it too. Julia and Brian manage to make their way into Castle Leoch through the secret passage, and Julia slips into Ellen's bedchamber. She explains all about the elixir and helps her apply it. According to Julia, the mixture should work its magic in some time and tighten Ellen's hymen like that of a virtuous woman.
Then came the most harrowing sequence in Outlander: Blood of My Blood Episode 8, Ellen's virtue test. She is put through a great deal of humiliation as the Grants' physician tests her virtue in front of her brothers and all the other men. Firstly, she is made to drink the water of boiled sea holly and asked to hold her pee. This is done to test the pelvic floor strength of the woman, a barbaric and seemingly wrong way to check one's virtue.
Afterward, Ellen is subjected to a physical examination, lying on a table while the Grants’ physician carefully checks her vitals. Julia’s elixir seems to have done its work, as the physician ultimately declares “virgo intacta,” confirming that Ellen has passed the so-called virtue test.
Outlander: Blood of My Blood Episode 8 recap: A short-lived reunion
While Julia and Brian were making their journey to Castle Leoch in Outlander: Blood of My Blood Episode 8, they reached a crossroads where one way would have taken Julia to Clan Grant (and to Henry) and the other to Castle Leoch. However, Julia chose to accompany Brian, and she was heftily rewarded for this choice.
After the virtue test, when Henry was about to leave with the Grants, Julia and Henry finally saw each other. The couple finally touched and kissed, confirming that their reunion was real and not a trick of Henry’s mind. In that moment, he also discovered the joyous news of his newborn son, William.
However, their reunion was short-lived as Brian interrupted them, and it was time to go. The couple parted again for now, but with the promise to meet again very soon. Just as Brian and Julia were escaping from the secret passage, Mrs. Fitz finds them. Returning the Fraser plaid to Brian, she warns him that if he truly loves Ellen, he will stay away from her.
