Outlander: Blood of My Blood finale featured a shocking tragedy that even took seasoned Outlander fans by surprise. After Brian learned that Colum sent the Glasgow assassins to kill him, he made his way to Castle Leoch and was all ready to escape with Ellen when Malcolm caught them.

As a true jilted lover, Ellen's groom was not ready to let her leave with Brian, which resulted in a bloody confrontation that concluded with Malcolm's tragic death.

Unpacking this shocking tragedy in the Outlander: Blood of My Blood finale, Jamie Roy (Brian) told Radio Times:

“That was unfortunate for old Malcy, but you gotta do what you gotta do...And I know Malcolm is such a likeable guy as well, so I honestly think it is going to split fans.”

While Brian did not want to murder a man in cold blood, Malcolm left him with no choice. The couple has escaped for now, but this harrowing murder could likely have consequences for Brian Fraser when Outlander: Blood of My Blood returns for Season 2.

More on this in our story.

Emerging as a true fallen hero, Malcolm bid goodbye to the Starz's prequel series after Brian killed him in self-defense in the Outlander: Blood of My Blood finale. After Brian and Ellen cleared their misunderstandings, they were hidden in Leoch's back room by Mrs. Fitz and Jocasta. While Colum and Malcolm searched for Ellen in her room, she was disguised as a maid and hidden away with Brian in a secluded part of the castle.

To uphold the agreement between their clans, Colum married Dougal to Malcolm's sister, Maura Grant. While this sudden union ensured that Clan MacKenzie and Clan Grant would not go to war against each other, Malcolm was still heartbroken over Ellen's betrayal like a jilted lover. He was not only intoxicated by alcohol during his sister's wedding festivities, but Uncle Mac also manipulated him to seek revenge from Ellen and her lover.

Just when Brian and Ellen were about to slip away from Leoch in the Outlander: Blood of My Blood finale, Malcolm caught them. The Grant laird was disappointed and angry to see that Ellen had chosen a lowlife like Brian against him. When he tried to stop the lovers and took out his sword, Brian plunged the blade into Malcolm in self-defense. While Brian and Ellen were disgusted by their action, they had no choice but to leave his body and escape from the castle.

Malcolm's death was a shock for the Outlander: Blood of My Blood cast

The Outlander: Blood of My Blood cast were shocked to read that Malcolm will die in the finale. While he was never meant to marry Ellen, he was a good character who genuinely had her best interests at heart. Unpacking his death, Harriet Slater (Ellen) told Radio Times:

“Everything to do with Malcolm was a huge surprise. Nobody saw that coming. So when we all read that, it was like, ‘What? Sweet, sweet Malc!’'

Defending Brian and Ellen's action, the actress further added:

“They didn’t want to kill him. Brian says a couple of times, ‘Please don’t do this,’ because he knows how it’s going to end. They give him opportunities to back down but he’s hell bent on revenge instilled in him by his nasty uncle. So it was unfortunately the only way out – it was kill or be killed.”

While Malcolm's death was truly tragic, it increased the stakes for Brian and Ellen's escape attempt. Seasoned Outlander fans always knew that Ellen would not marry Malcolm but would escape with Brian on her wedding day. However, they were unaware of these little details and the cost the lovers paid to escape in the Outlander: Blood of My Blood finale. Roy explained this difficult choice as:

“I would imagine fans will be surprised. Because most people know how the story ends, they know we get together, we have children, Jamie Fraser, and all that stuff, but it’s the ‘how’ which is the most fun part. I don’t think anybody is going to see that coming with Malcolm. I think it is going to be a huge shock.''

Outlander: Blood of My Blood is streaming on Starz. The show has been renewed for a second season, with production currently underway in Scotland.
