Peacemaker Season 2 saw the return of Rick Flag Sr., played by Frank Grillo, in his third consecutive return in the DCU. Before this, Grillo appeared as Flag Sr. in Creature Commandos Season 1 and Superman in a varying capacity. While he was one of the protagonists of Creature Commandos Season 1, Richard Flag Sr. cameoed in Superman.

But it is his role in Peacemaker that has a lot of fans talking. When we meet him for the first time in Creature Commandos Season 1, Flag Sr. is mourning the death of his son, Rick Flag Jr., who died in the closing minutes of 2021's The Suicide Squad. He is somewhat similar in his small role in Superman, with his appearance in the closing minutes of the movie supposedly setting up the dark turn in Peacemaker Season 2.

His dark turn in the John Cena-led series has some wondering if Richard Flag Sr. is the big bad for the DCU. While that might be the case, based on how the latest season of Peacemaker ended, Flag Sr. might be a secondary antagonist.

Rick Flag Sr.'s journey from Creature Commandos Season 1 to Peacemaker Season 2 explained:

Fans met Rick Flag Sr. for the very first time in the animated series Creature Commandos. On the surface, Flag Sr. looks like the typical tough military general. However, viewers were surprised to see a more reasonable side to his character that one may not expect from a character like this. He is the leader of Task Force M.

He is mourning his son, and this vulnerability is why Princess Ilana Rostovic seduces him. However, this turned out to be Ilana's ploy, and their intimate relationship was just a ploy to manipulate him. His next appearance was in Superman, where he reluctantly arrests the Man of Steel and even apologizes to the latter. Flag Sr. reappears in the closing minutes of the movie, where he realizes the dangers posed by metahumans.

Sometime between Superman and Peacemaker Season 2, Rick Flag Sr. replaced Amanda Waller as the new A.R.G.U.S. director. Soon after becoming the new A.R.G.U.S. director, Flag. Sr. learns the identity of the man who murdered his son under Waller's orders: Christopher Smith/Peacemaker. He has A.R.G.U.S. stealthily monitor Chris's movements.

It is here that he learns about Christopher's QUC portal, which he has hidden inside his home. Thus, most of Peacemaker Season 2 is about Flag Sr. trying to imprison Chris under the excuse of the latter using forbidden interdimensional technology. In the penultimate episode of the second season, Chris surrenders the portable QUC key and himself to A.R.G.U.S.

He is bailed in the season 2 finale and reunites with the 11th Street Kids and joins Leota Adebayo's security firm "Checkmate". Moreover, joining Checkmate are A.R.G.U.S. agents like Langston Fleury, Judomaster, and Sasha Bordeaux, who have resigned from the government organization. Chris and his friends are in a celebratory mood, but it all comes crashing down when Flag Sr. orders A.R.G.U.S. agents to abduct Chris.

Flag then uses the QUC to maroon Chris on the alien planet referred to as "Salvation". Chris tries to reach the QUC door but fails to do so as it disappears, leaving him marooned there. Before the screen cuts to black, we hear the screams of some hellish creatures that are off-screen.

Why Richard Flag Sr. broke back in the second season?

Flag Sr.'s drastic change in character has some shocked, as he appeared to be better in the previous DCU projects. His fall from grace can be explained by the fact that he finally learns the identity of the man who killed his son and A.R.G.U.S.'s culpability in it. But it should also be noted that he is willingly collaborating with Lex Luthor, whom Flag Sr. did not trust in Superman.

This has some wondering if mind control might be at play behind this change in Peacemaker Season 2. But as of now, the DCU hasn't introduced mind control, and many believe that Flag Sr.'s downfall is due to vengefulness rather than losing his agency.

All eight episodes of Peacemaker Season 2 are available through streaming on HBO Max. Stream the entire season to trace the downfall of Rick Flag Sr.
