Apple TV+ romantic comedy series Prodigies has added Academy Award-nominated and Emmy-winning actor John Malkovich as a guest star.

The rom-com series, created by Will Sharpe, stars Ayo Edebiri and Sharpe in the lead and titular roles of two child prodigies, who begin to question their relationship and lives after reaching their 30s.

Will Sharpe serves as showrunner and writer on the series and also executive produces along with Edebiri, Jane Featherstone, Naomi de Pear, and Katie Carpenter via Sister.

John Malkovich, best known for his work in Ten Year Old Tom, Space Force, The ABC Murders, and The New Pope, will join Edebiri on their second project together after Mark Anthony Green’s 2025 movie Opus. The Death of a Salesman actor had previously starred as Lucien Lelong in Apple TV's 2024 series The New Look.

More on Prodigies in our story.

What is Prodigies about?

Actor John Malkovich is all set to star in his second Apple TV project, a rom-com series that follows Didi and Ren, a couple (and former child geniuses) in their 30s. After being together as a couple for almost a decade, Didi and Ren start to question their ordinary lives and relationship and the fading promise of an extraordinary future everyone saw in them during their childhood.

Unlike modern rom-coms, Prodigies follows the aftermath of a supposedly 'happily-ever-after,' as the official logline reads:

''As individual hopes and needs feed into and conflict with their [Didi and Ren's] shared lives, the series challenges the fallacy at the heart of romantic storytelling — that the tale is over when the heroes get together. In life, surely, that is just the beginning?”

While most romantic comedies end with happily-ever-afters, Sharpe's rom-com series subverts the romantic formula, questioning how long individual dreams and ambitions can balance with a long-term relationship.

The seven-episode series will scrutinize Didi and Ren's long-term relationship after they realize that the promise of an extraordinary life in their childhood has faded away in their adult lives.

Who else is in the cast of Prodigies?

Apple TV's latest romantic series is led by Ayo Edebiri and Will Sharpe. Edebiri, who has previously shown her comedic brilliance in FX's The Bear and Bottoms, will star in her first romantic role.

She will be paired alongside Sharpe, who recently starred opposite Megan Stalter in Netflix's rom-com series Too Much. In addition, Sharpe is also known for his roles in The White Lotus Season 2, A Real Pain, and Flowers. Sharpe will also showcase his creative genius behind the scenes on the show.

In addition to John Malkovich's unnamed guest character (as of yet), the series also stars the following actors in supporting roles:

  1. Andrene Ward-Hammond (61st Street)
  2. Yumi Asō (Perfect Days)
  3. Tobias Menzies (Outlander)
  4. Rina Sawayama as Hana (Turn Up Charlie)
  5. Sophia Di Martino (Loki)
  6. Reece Shearsmith (Inside No. 9)
  7. Nabhaan Rizwan (Dope Girls)
  8. Meera Syal (The Wheel of Time)
  9. Lolly Adefope (Ghosts)

Apple TV+ has not yet announced a release date for their seven-episode series, which will surely be a monumental addition to their library of already impressive titles. The partnership between Emmy-winning actress Edebiri and multifaceted creator and actor Sharpe is certainly one of the biggest forces behind Prodigies, and the show is set to become a standout for Apple TV.
