Star Wars’ Andor is on its way to an epic conclusion with the last block of episodes: 10-12 premiering on May 13, 2025. As the Ghorman massacre has already taken place, the last three episodes of the Disney+ series will focus on the last year of Cassian’s life before the events of Rogue One, continuing his story.
However, Season 2 was not always supposed to be the last season of Andor, as creator Tony Gilroy had a full-fledged plan of creating five seasons, and depicting five years of Cassian’s life before Rogue One.
But after the production began for Season 1, Gilroy realised how difficult it would be to go with his five-season plan. Therefore, after discussing it with Andor star Diego Luna, Gilroy approached Disney, and the two-season plan was hatched.
More on this in our story.
Why is Andor ending after two seasons? Reasons explored
Andor is the latest Star Wars show that is being loved by fans. It focuses on the mature side of the narrative, focusing on political issues, the beginning of a rebellion, and the struggles related to it, sometimes even concerning the real world. Season 2, which is divided into four blocks of three episodes each, follows Cassian’s life in the remaining four years before the events of Rogue One.
However, Tony Gilroy's initial plan did not include covering four years of Cassian's life in one season. His original plan was to create five seasons with 12 episodes each (just like the two seasons), with each season focusing on one year of Cassian's life. But as the production began, Gilroy seemed doubtful about completing his plan. While talking to SFX Magazine, Gilroy said:
“We were halfway through shooting Season 1, coming through Covid, and the monumental size of the show, the effort, and everything else was just dawning on us. We realized that I didn't have enough calories to do it, and Diego's face couldn't take the timing, because it just takes too long to make it.”
He continued:
“We were saved by Disney saying, 'Okay, if you guys can figure out a way to do it, we're into it'."
During an interview with ScreenRant, Gilroy talked about how it has been almost 10 years since he has been in the Star Wars universe and how he wants to leave things in better shape. This might be it for now.
He said:
“I think I really have given a lot and I think it's time for me to go do something else. I'm trying to get [a] movie off. I mean, I'll never say never, but I mean I really, it's been five and a half, six years. And then if you throw in Rogue, it goes into 10.”
He further added:
“I mean, I've tried to leave things in better shape than I've took in my five years and I've left them in better shape than I found them. And I feel good about that. And right now I'd like to leave it like that.”
As per a report by Forbes, the massive sets and on-location shoots, the production of only two seasons of Andor cost around $645 million. Hence, it might be a logical decision not just for the creator and actors, but also for the producers and production house.
