Actor Patrick Gibson's debut stint as the infamous serial killer Dexter Morgan has come to an unexpected halt as Paramount has canceled Dexter: Original Sin after Season 1. The shocking news comes after the network renewed the show for a second season in April 2025.
The prequel series, which also stars Michael C. Hall as Dexter's inner monologue, is set fifteen years before the events of Dexter. The series, set in 1990s Miami, follows a young Dexter as he learns to control his killing urges with the help of his adoptive father Harry.
Fans are certainly disappointed after Dexter: Original Sin's abrupt conclusion, which was just beginning to expand on young Dexter's story. A Reddit user expressed their disappointment over the cancelation saying:
''I don’t mind the other spinoffs being dead, those seemed like too much. But killing off original sin sucks so bad.''
In addition to Gibson, Dexter: Original Sin also stars Christian Slater as Harry Morgan and Molly Brown as Debra Morgan.

Reddit fans react to Dexter: Original Sin's cancelation news
Since Dexter: Original Sin showed potential and was just beginning to expand on young Dexter's formative years, fans are disappointed by Paramount's sudden cancelation news. In addition to the infamous serial killer, the prequel series also shed light on Dexter's relationship with Harry, Debra, and his biological brother Brian Moser.
Fans were especially impressed by the exceptional cast of the prequel series, as u/JackSpadesSI commented:
''I thought the Dex and Deb actors on OS were phenomenal. I liked nearly everything about OS, but if that was the last I’ll see of them in those roles, I’ll be very sad.''
Another Reddit user Kaldricus agreed and liked how Dexter: Original Sin rightly captured the early nostalgic feel of the parent series, taking the viewers to Dexter's formative years:
''It was great to be back in Miami. The casting was fantastic. It was fun and felt like I'm watching Dexter for the first time again...I'm legitimately pissed, and hope something happens and they walk it back.''
While it is suspected that one of the reasons Paramount canceled Original Sin is because the prequel series failed to match the overwhelming response and success of Dexter Resurrection, many fans believe that both shows could have co-existed and benefited from each other's success.
''I think s2 would've done much better after the breakout success of resurrection.'' said u/AdministrationOk5531
''More views would have come post-Resurrection. Truly. To announce this mid-Resurrection also puts a bit of a bad taste on the rest of the season, too. Especially with all of the OS references they’ve added to the Resurrection lore / flashbacks...'' u/bellafitty agreed
Dexter: Original Sin, the first prequel and spin-off to not feature Hall's Dexter, expanded on many storylines from the parent series. Not only did fans learn about how Dexter became the infamous serial killer, but also about his formative years as a student, the formation of the code with Harry, and his first apartment in Miami.
In addition, the series was also beginning to expand on Brian's storyline, and Season 2 showed potential for The Ice Truck Killer's relationship with Dexter and Harry, which will sadly not materialize now. Reddit user Conscious-reesescup rightly pointed out all the wasted potential following the cancelation news:
''Man I was so excited to see when he’d finally get his apartment. Also I loved how he never stabs through the heart in this one. If I remember correctly it was cause easy clean up? Was really hoping to see how his technique evolves to the Dexter we know...''
In addition to this cancellation news, a Variety report also suggests that Paramount is planning to open a writer's room for Resurrection Season 2. The series will premiere its Season 1 finale on Paramount+ Premium on September 5, 2025.
