Ever since it was announced that Samuel L. Jackson would be leading NOLA King, a spin-off of Tulsa King, fans have been excited to watch the veteran actor’s entry into Taylor Sheridan’s crime drama universe.
Jackson will be debuting the character of Russell Lee Washington, a mob boss, in Tulsa King Season 3 before leading the spin-off. While audiences are eagerly awaiting the arrival of the acclaimed actor in the franchise, Sylvester Stallone was not initially very keen on sharing the screen space with Jackson.
In a recent interview, Stallone, who plays the lead Dwight Manfredi in the original show, revealed that he initially felt threatened when he got to know that Samuel L. Jackson would lead NOLA King, as he saw him as a competition. However, the hesitation faded away later, and the two have a great working relationship now.
Sylvester Stallone did not want Samuel L. Jackson to star in NOLA King
NOLA King was confirmed to be in development at Paramount+ in June this year, with Samuel L. Jackson playing Russell Lee Washington, a mob boss like Sylvester Stallone’s Dwight Manfredi. The spin-off has yet to begin production, but Jackson will soon be seen as Russell in Tulsa King Season 3 alongside Stallone.
During an interaction with People Magazine, Stallone revealed that when he learned Jackson was going to be his co-star and later have his own spin-off, he felt a little nervous as he thought he might clash with him on the sets. However, when he worked with him, it turned out to be a good experience. Stallone said:
“I went, 'This is gonna be a fistfight. This is gonna be a battle.' Like two boxers in a ring: Who is gonna throw the first punch? So, you're getting nervous because you're dealing with serious competition. But now we're good. We're flowing. We could do a show called 'Tulsa King and Buddy.' We worked well together.”
Stallone has led Tulsa King for three seasons, playing Dwight. The show chronicles the mafia capo as he moves to Tulsa to establish criminal operations after spending 25 years in prison. As Dwight rises in power in the city, he comes across various allies and enemies.
NOLA King, on the other hand, is going to focus on Russell Lee Washington, who spent 10 years in prison with Dwight and forged a friendship with him. The Renzetti crime family orders him to go to Tulsa and hunt down Dwight. However, he instead gets inspired by the mafia capo and decides to build his own criminal empire in New Orleans. Russell then returns to his town after more than four decades and begins his operation there.
Tulsa King is currently in its third season, while the release date of NOLA King has not been announced yet. The full cast of the spin-off has also not been revealed as of now; however, the show is expected to begin production in early 2026. The series was being created by Tulsa King showrunner Dave Erickson, but he later exited the project.
