HBO's Task Episode 2 sets up a dramatic series while addressing important questions raised in the first episode. We can also infer that the rest of the series revolves around the FBI team led by Tom Brandis, as they attempt to locate Sam. Complicating matters for both the FBI and Robbie's crew is the biker gang Dark Hearts, from which Robbie has been stealing.
The second episode that aired on Sunday, September 14, 2025, on HBO saw Robbie being conflicted about what to do about Sam. But it also made some exciting revelations that suggest that the walls might be closing in on Robbie and Cliff, as this episode revealed that he had someone's help from inside the gang. Thus, the third episode, releasing next Sunday, is going to provide more answers.
"Set in the working-class suburbs of Philadelphia, an FBI agent (Mark Ruffalo) heads a Task Force to put an end to a string of violent robberies led by an unsuspecting family man (Tom Pelphrey)."

Task Episode 2 summary:
The second episode, Family Statements, is all about the fallout from the previous episode. Robbie has to plan out what he needs to do with Sam after taking him to his place. As that happens, Maeve discovers Sam's identity despite Robbie lying to her earlier. We also learn in this episode that Robbie's deceased brother, Billy, was murdered by Dark Hearts' Delaware country leader Jayson.
This episode reveals that Billy was a part of Dark Hearts and was suspected of being a mole, which is why Jayson supposedly murdered him. But the most devastating revelation of the episode is in the last act of this Task episode, as Tom Brandis' (Mark Ruffalo) devastating backstory is revealed. We learn that Tom had adopted two siblings, Emily and Ethan, in addition to his own biological daughter, Sara.
Ethan is a young man with some mental health problems. During the pandemic, when Ethan was off his meds, he threw his adoptive mother off the steps. As Sara, Emily, and Tom are having conversations about what to say in Ethan's trial, Sara tells Emily that she and Ethan are not her family, which causes Tom to reprimand her. Then, he delivers this monologue as Sara leaves them:
“It’s easy to talk about forgiveness when it’s not your loss. I miss your mother. I miss my son. And there’s not a day that goes by that I don’t wake up and think, That didn’t happen. That couldn’t possibly have happened. Not to us. But it did. So, forgiveness and mercy? I don’t know. I’ve prayed for an answer, or some kind of guidance, and all I’ve gotten in return in silence. I’m lost."
But the most tense moments in the episode are in the last act, as Maeve takes Sam to a family entertainment center after learning his identity. She tips off the helpline, but changes her mind at the last minute and takes him back home.
HBO released a promo for the third episode that shows Tom approaching the Dark Hearts Gang, informing them about a mole that's helping the crew rob their drug houses.
The first two episodes of the HBO miniseries Task are accessible via streaming on HBO Max. Catch them as soon as possible.
