Seasoned Western genre fans are enjoying Netflix's latest action drama series The Abandons, created by Sons of Anarchy fame Kurt Sutter. The seven-part Western series follows a bloody land war between Fiona Nolan (Lena Heady) and Constance Van Ness (Gillian Anderson) against the ruthless backdrop of the American frontier in the 1850s.

Fiona and Constance are two sides of the same coin, two widowed matriarchs trying to fend for their children and a failing dynasty. But when the main mines around Angel’s Ridge begin to run dry, the rich silver vein beneath Fiona’s Jasper Hollow becomes a rare bright spot and Constance moves in to seize the land for herself.

The Abandons explores mature themes of power, betrayal & revenge and is unfit for young teens. Parents concerned about their kids' digital activity should not let their young ones stream this new title on Netflix, for many reasons.

Here, we discuss the mature themes explored in the series.

Netflix's library is bustling with a new Western drama, The Abandons, which initially showed potential as the streamer's Yellowstone equivalent. However, with creator Kurt Sutter's controversial exit weeks before the production wrapped up and the platform's decision to reduce the show's episodes from 10 to 7, the action series is struggling to find its footing with the audience. With only a day after its release, critics are already divided about the show but it has certainly caught the eye of Western drama enthusiasts.

If your teens are also seasoned action-genre fans, chances are that The Abandons will pop up on their streaming devices sooner or later. But parents must do a quick scan beforehand as the show is rated TV-MA in the US, 18+ in the UK and R21 in Singapore.

The Abandons explores mature themes of greed, power and betrayal against the ruthless and unforgiving American frontier, which are surely not suitable for teens below 17-18 years old. A TV-MA rating is usually awarded to shows with extreme violence, s*xual content, profanity and highly frightening scenes. Since Netflix’s Western drama carries a TV-MA rating, it is unsuitable for younger viewers.

The Abandons parents guide: Things to look out for

While the Western drama is an exciting mix of family politics and action, these factors should be considered before streaming it on Netflix:

Violence and graphic scenes: Fiona and Constance's brutal land war forms the heart of the narrative, resulting in ample violence and frightening scenes. Hand-to-hand combat, gun brawls, physical fights and extensive death scenes are heavily featured in the series, making it unsuitable for young teens.

Additionally, the Season 1 finale features Dahlia's r*pe at the hands of Willem, which leads to his brutal death. This is one of the most disturbing montages from the show, directly leading to the fiery showdown between the titular and Van Ness clans. Garret's search for Willem's body is another frightening scene to look out for.

S*xual content and alcohol use: While The Abandons does not heavily feature explicit n*dity and s*x, it contains discussions of sexual relationships and intimate scenes, especially between the star-crossed lovers, Elias and Trisha. Additionally, characters are often shown drinking and smoking in saloons.

Exploration of mature themes: Lastly, Netflix's latest Western drama explores a wide array of mature themes like emotional loss, twisted family dynamics, complicated romantic relationships and betrayal. Revenge is another powerful theme that runs throughout the series, which comes to a head when Constance kidnaps Dahlia in revenge for Willem Van Ness' murder at the hands of her rival, Fiona.

Netflix's The Abandons feels like an exciting new Western drama, whose complicated family dynamics and dark storytelling might interest an adult audience but the show is unfit for young teens. The idea of a chosen family within Fiona Nolan’s clan could have offered a meaningful takeaway for young teens but the series spends little time exploring those bonds and instead focuses on their ongoing conflict with the Van Ness family.
