Western drama lovers, assemble! Netflix has just dropped a seven-part series titled The Abandons that follows a fiery land war between Fiona Nolan (Lena Heady), the leader of the titular gang and Constance (Gillian Anderson), the ruthless matriarch of her Van Ness family.

Both Fiona and Constance butt heads over the silver-rich ground of Jasper Hollow in the 1850s, owned by the former and three other families. As Constance threatens to snatch the very livelihood of Fiona's dynasty and her adopted family, she takes matters into her own hands by killing Willem Van Ness in the Season 1 finale. After Constance realizes this, she kidnaps Dahlia, and Fiona's children set fire to the Van Ness estate.

Netflix has neither renewed nor canceled The Abandons yet. Since the show concludes with an open ending and is backed up by powerful performances from both Heady and Anderson, it could earn a Season 2 renewal at Netflix.

Here we explore the possibilities for Season 2.

Considering The Abandons has just dropped on Netflix, it might be a while before we learn the fate of the Western drama series. However, the series has a 50-50 chance at Season 2 renewal, much like the mediocre 50% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Audience and critics, who have already watched the show, are heavily divided, making it difficult to predict whether this title will bag a Season 2 renewal on Netflix. However, since the show was not dubbed as a limited series/miniseries and ends on a major cliffhanger, it might be looking at expansion beyond the freshman season. Netflix weighs several metrics before deciding a show’s fate, from completion and drop-off rates to the number of viewers who tuned in during its first week. Since The Abandons is still in very early stages after its premiere, the streamer will likely decide and announce its fate soon.

While the Western drama feels like an impressive addition to the streamer's library, with many calling it their Yellowstone equivalent, the show struggled to find its footing after creator Kurt Sutter's (Sons of Anarchy) exit over 'creative differences' with Netflix. Even though series' higher-ups, Otto Bathurst and Rob Askins, managed to wrap the remaining production, many critics feel that Sutter's exit might cost the show in the long run.

The Abandons Season 1 concluded on a shocking cliffhanger

The Abandons’ open ending and jaw-dropping cliffhanger strongly hint at the possibility of another season. The deadly land war between Fiona and Constance came to a head when Garret found Willem's hidden body in the Hollow and the Van Ness family kidnapped Dahlia in retaliation for their son's murder. As Constance had anticipated, Fiona arrived at her house to rescue her adopted daughter, but with her army of have-nots and a carriage full of inflammable materials.

After Constance retreated inside her house, Quentin and Elias pushed the inflammable materials inside and set the house on fire. However, in the final moments of The Abandons, Fiona entered the burning house to confront Constance but only one woman remained standing. The final shot featured a lone silhouette of a woman and the series ended without revealing the identity of the survivor.

As executive producer Chris Keyser remained tight-lipped about the show's open ending with Netflix Tudum, a second season could likely answer some burning questions. Keyser teased:

“I’m not going to answer that question. … I have a feeling about how it ought to go, but I don’t want to, in any way, tip my hand. Clearly, one person survives, maybe two people survive, [but] which one that is, and whether it’s one or two — all of those things are up in the air. And that’s the fun.”

The Abandons is streaming on Netflix.
