The Comeback is soon making a comeback on television with a whole new season. HBO is reviving the Lisa Kudrow series for the second time and bringing it back for a third and final chapter. The comedy show revolves around Valerie Cherish, a sitcom actress past her prime, who is trying to revive her career.
The first season, which came out in 2005, chronicled her journey as she became part of a reality show that traced her return to the sitcom world. The second season was then released in 2014 and followed Valerie as she pitched a new reality show pilot to a network.
In June 2025, HBO officially announced the third and final season of the series, more than a decade after the second season’s premiere. Here is everything we know so far about The Comeback Season 3.
The Comeback Season 3 was confirmed in June 2025
In June 2025, HBO announced that The Comeback Season 3 was officially in development, with Lisa Kudrow reprising her role as Valerie and serving as the co-creator. Michael Patrick King, the original co-creator, is returning as well to work on the final season. Announcing the project, Kudrow and King released a joint statement, which read:
“Valerie Cherish has found her way back to the current television landscape. Neither of us are surprised she did.”
Amy Gravitt, the EVP of HBO and HBO Max comedy, also released a statement and said:
“No matter what the industry throws at her, Valerie Cherish is a survivor. On the 20th Anniversary of her debut, Michael Patrick King and Lisa Kudrow have brilliantly scripted her return to HBO and we can’t wait to see that.”
Is there a release date for The Comeback Season 3?
HBO has not yet announced the exact release date of The Comeback Season 3. The network has only announced the release year as 2026. Apart from airing on HBO, the episodes will also be made available to stream on HBO Max. The show began production in the summer of 2025, and hence, it seems right on track to arrive on the screens in 2026.
The plot and cast details of The Comeback Season 3
While the plot details have been kept under wraps, HBO unveiled a teaser of the season, which hints that Valerie will be working on a new show in her attempt to revive her sitcom career once again. Lisa Kudrow is seen in the teaser as she tells her director:
“This is the last one, all right? Last time. Never doing this again. We’ll, I’ve got a new show. How’s that? And I’m so excited about it.”
The season is going to mark the return of some original cast members, including Kurdow as Valerie Cherish; Laura Silverman as Jane Benson, Valerie’s reality show producer; Dan Bucatinsky as Billy Stanton, Valerie's publicist; and Damian Young as Mark Berman, Valerie's husband.
Additionally, Matt Cook, Ella Stiller, Tim Bagley, and Jack O’Brien have joined the show in undisclosed roles. Interestingly, Cook was seen in the second season as Ivan, and Bagley appeared as Frank. However, both these roles were minor, and it remains to be seen whether they will again play the same roles or appear as two new characters.
