“The exact opposite of that”: Glenn Howerton reveals how his Sirens' character is starkly different from his real-life personality

After stellar performances in shows like It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and The Mindy Project, Glenn Howerton has taken up the role of Ethan Corbin III in Netflix's Sirens, and has once again impressed the audience with his comic yet nuanced act.

The actor plays Michaela "Kiki" Kell’s neighbor, who is in a secret relationship with Simone DeWitt, played by Milly Alcock. In an interview with People Magazine, Howerton has revealed that playing the character was a challenge for him as his real personality is starkly different from Ethan's.

Howerton explained how Ethan is a naive man in Sirens, while in reality, the actor himself is quite understanding and is not at all oblivious to his surroundings:

“My character's very kind of naive and slightly oblivious, and I sort of pride myself on being the exact opposite of that in the real world. I try really to hard [sic] to understand how my actions affect other people and not move through the world in an oblivious manner.”

Glenn Howerton further talked about how difficult it was for him to play an oblivious character in Sirens, but that is the beauty of his profession, as he sometimes likes to take up challenging roles:

“[Ethan’s] more oblivious moments [are] a little difficult for me to play because it's just so different from me, but that's also what I love about it. We're always looking for a challenge.”

“I don't want to be myself all the time on screen. Sometimes I do, and sometimes it's good to just put on a lucky blazer and be a totally different person.”

Howerton’s performance as Ethan has been well appreciated by the audience and critics alike. Initially, he is seen as a rich and mysterious man who lives next to Michaela’s estate. He secretly dates Simone and becomes part of her hidden life.

When he suddenly disappears, everyone gets worried about him. However, Ethan later returns with a surprise that changes the course of his relationship with Simone. Before starring in Sirens, Howerton played Dennis Reynolds in It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Corey Howard in That '80s Show, Jerry in The Fugitive, and Cliff Gilbert in The Mindy Project.

Sirens tells the story of Devon DeWitt, who is worried about her sister Simone’s weird relationship with her boss, Michaela Kell, the owner of a large estate, who is treated like a queen. When Devon arrives on the island to protect Simone, some dark secrets about Michaela start to come out.
