Based on Stephen King’s 2019 novel, The Institute has quickly emerged as one of MGM+’s most searched titles, enthralling audiences with its unsettling blend of supernatural fear and human courage. The series centres around a world in which children with extraordinary gifts are taken from their homes and subjected to cruel experiments behind the walls of shadowy facilities, their extraordinary abilities utilised according to the whims of powerful forces.

The series ended in both devastation and triumph, and with a crumbled Institute and a continuing unease that remained in its wake. By combining horror, suspense and a deeply emotional coming-of-age thread, the series succeeded in remaining true to King’s voice, all the while hinting that its true mysteries extended well past the bounds of the original book. Season 2 is now official, and The Institute’s world is going to explore new and more dangerous territory.

Jack Bender on the future of The Institute Season 2

Executive producer and director Jack Bender has been clear about the direction of the next chapter. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, he revealed that Season 1 used up the source material entirely, which means the creative team must now venture into fresh storytelling. He explained:

“Ben Cavell and I, Stephen [King], and Michael Wright, the head of the studio, all hoped there'd be more seasons because we felt that if we established these characters and the fact that they're all over the world, all that stuff that's mentioned, there's no reason why not. There are a few more seasons in this show and in this idea.”

Bender also hinted at the children still being on the run, and how the bigger network of Institutes would play into a lot of the conflict of the new season. Describing the fight as epic, he said:

“At the same time, it's taking down the dragon. It's fighting the dragons in Game of Thrones. Where are the dragons in the world? I think that the other Institutes will play into it, and who's controlling it all will play into it.”

Season 1 revolved around Luke Ellis - a boy with genius-level intelligence and telekinetic powers, whose special gifts left him in the sinister crosshairs of this even more sinister operation - and how he and other young prisoners risked everything to make a break for it.

The Institute's renewal and MGM’s commitment

For MGM+, the series has been a landmark success. Michael Wright, head of the platform, celebrated its impact, telling The Hollywood Reporter:

“The Institute has thrilled audiences with its distinctive storytelling and exceptional performances that expertly bring the singular voice of Stephen King to the screen. We’re so happy to be able to continue and expand this chilling journey and dive even deeper into the secrets of The Institute in Season 2.”

Co-showrunners Bender and Benjamin Cavell echoed the sentiment in a joint statement, expressing how gratified they were by the audience response and the dedication of the cast and crew. Their commitment to continue “Stephen’s powerful and timely story” underscores how central King’s themes remain to the adaptation.

What The Institute is about and how Season 1 ended

At its core, The Institute portrays children and outsiders pitted against authoritarian structures that manipulate their gifts. Season 1 followed Luke and his fellow captives as they were subjected to brutal testing at the hands of Ms. Sigsby and her staff. Working with their fellow rebels, they were able to take down one Institute, but the last-minute showed them that the Institute was stronger and more widespread than they had ever realised. The mysterious Lisping Man was still calling the shots, a cold warning that the foe had not been all annihilated.

Season 1 ended with Luke, Kalisha, Nicky, George, Tim and Wendy on the run. The unanswered questions as to who is running the Institutes and how deep the conspiracy goes pave the way for an expanded story. The second season will now take a look at these loose ends, mixing in more of King’s signature themes of strength in adversity, social commentary and the determined power of the unbroken.
