Netflix's latest crime drama series, The Monster of Florence, recounts the horrific incident that took place in Florence, Italy, in the early 1970s and 1980s. Episode 1 of the true crime series begins with the murder of a young couple. ADA Silvia thinks that the murder is linked with several other double homicides that have been occurring since 1968.
She begins to find a connection between the murders and also meets Stefano Mele, who was sentenced to prison for committing the first murder. With the help of flashbacks, we are introduced to several suspects of the murder cases in the premiere episode.

The Monster of Florence Episode 1 recap: Silvia tries to connect the murder to past homicides

In Episode 1 of The Monster of Florence, a young couple is shot down by a masked figure on June 19, 1982, in Florence. While the woman dies instantly, the medical team tries to save the man. ADA Silvia deduces it as a crime against women.
She tries to comfort the female victims' parents and is informed by Detective Vincenzo that the man did not survive. However, Silvia still does not reveal the exact truth and tells the press that, before dying, the man named Paolo revealed crucial details about the appearance of the killer.
Later, she discusses with her partner that this murder might be connected to the other four double homicides that they have covered, suggesting that all of them share the MO and are done by the same killer. She then begins investigating all the double homicides that occurred in the past two decades to find the serial killer, who is referred to as 'The Monster' in the series.
The Monster of Florence Episode 1 recap: Silvia meets Stefano Mele
After researching, she uncovers another double homicide and goes to inform her Chief. However, their Chief informs them that the killer of the homicide incident, Stefano Mele, had confessed and was in prison, but still allows Silvia to re-investigate.
Through flashback, Stefano and Barbara's life is shown, and how she was s*xually assaulted by a man named Salvatore. After refusing once, Stefano agrees to meet the detectives who inform him that the weapon that he used to kill his wife and her lover was also used to kill three more couples. Stefano tells them that he has no idea who has the weapon, as he threw it away after killing his wife.
In Episode 1 of The Monster of Florence, Barbara is revealed to have also dated Salavatore's brother, Francesco. Flashback of the night of when Barbara died, showed that Natalino was also there, and due to the family's pressure, Stefano confesses to killing Barbara and her lover, to protect his son.
The detectives did not think he was the real killer, and in a shocking twist at the end of the episode, he reveals that it was Francesco who killed Barbara, as he couldn't accept the fact that Barbara had left him.
