Claire Holt's Rebekah Mikaelson was one of the many characters initially introduced in The Vampire Diaries and was later featured in The Originals.
The supernatural spin-off series marked a fresh start for Rebekah, who shared a complicated dynamic with the Salvatore brothers in the parent show. After meeting Stefan in the 1920s, Original Vampire Rebekah wanted to live a mortal life, having her own family and children.
Rebekah's continued relationships with Stefan and Damon were disapproved by her half-brother, Klaus, and he even daggered her for ninety years in punishment for choosing Stefan over him.
While Rebekah was daggered (and subsequently revived) many times by her siblings, The Originals finale saw Klaus arranging the Cure for her, which will allow her to live the mortal life she has always desired.
More on this in our story.
Klaus promised the 'Cure' to Rebekah in The Originals finale
In her millennium-long life, Rebekah had only desired one thing: to live a normal human life and have babies with somebody who loves her deeply. After meeting Stefan Salvatore in the 1920s, she even starts to dream about having a family with him. However, since Klaus was a major rival to the Salvatore brothers, he disapproved of their relationship.
The Originals marked a new beginning for Rebekah's character, and she returned to New Orleans to her siblings. Despite her complicated relationship with Klaus, she agrees to play family with the Mikaelsons, even moving on from Stefan and starting a relationship with Marcel, Klaus' protégé.
Since Klaus disapproved of Rebekah's choice in men, he was against her relationship with Marcel, leading the couple to break up after Marcel chooses power over Rebekah.
However, in The Originals' final season, Marcel proposed to Rebekah and suggested that the two live together in New Orleans. Since Rebekah always wanted to turn into a human and live a normal life, Klaus arranges for his sister to get the Cure in Mystic Falls.
As Klaus and Elijah sacrificed themselves for the greater good of New Orleans, they left Rebekah with the Cure, which will finally allow her to live a mortal life. The finale saw her getting engaged to Marcel, following which the couple moved to New York.
Rebekah's bittersweet ending explained by The Originals' creator Julie Plec
The Originals finale suggested that while Rebekah finally gets the Cure, it will be only possible after some decades, when Damon will live out his natural life and pass on the Cure to Rebekah.
Discussing Rebekah's ending in the supernatural drama, creator Julie Plec explained in an interview with TVLine:
"[The cure is] in Damon. Damon Salvatore needs to grow old and have babies and grand babies and great grand babies with Elena Gilbert-Salvatore. At the end of their long Notebook life, when they die side by side, when they're ready to go, he'll hand the cure over to Rebekah.''
She added:
"When you take the cure out of a former vampire who's taken the cure, they age and die. Basically, when Damon's ready to go — which is when Elena is ready to go — that's when Rebekah will get the cure."
This hidden detail in The Originals finale made some fans feel that Rebekah had a bittersweet ending in the show. While she will not be able to have babies with the upgraded Original Vampire Marcel, it would take a while until she finally gets the Cure and lives the life she has always desired.
