Charles Michael Davis' Marcel Gerard is certainly one of the most interesting characters in the supernatural drama series The Originals, a spin-off of The Vampire Diaries.
While Marcel was born to a slave woman and her owner, he was turned into a vampire by Niklaus Mikaelson, who took him under his wing and eventually adopted him as his son and protégé.
This marked the beginning of Marcel's volatile relationship with the Mikaelsons, which eventually resulted in the fulfillment of the prophecy and his transformation into an Upgraded Original Vampire.
In The Originals Season 3, after the Mikaelsons orchestrated the sacrifice of Davina Claire, Marcel's adoptive daughter, Marcel turns against them. This directly leads to his death in the show, at the hands of Elijah Mikaelson. However, this death was not permanent either, as Marcel had already taken Lucien's serum, which turned him into an Upgraded Original.
More on this in our story.
The Originals: Explaining Marcel's temporary death
Marcel's character arc and relationship with the Mikaelsons underwent a drastic change in The Originals' subsequent seasons. Initially, a protege and adoptive son to Klaus, Marcel shared a friendly relationship with his siblings, Elijah, Rebekah and Kol. However, his romantic relationship with Rebekah created a rift between him and the Mikaelson siblings.
After the Mikaelson siblings flee from New Orleans to avoid their father's terror, Marcel begins ruling over the supernatural beings and forms the French Quartet. However, Klaus' return creates another rift between the characters, ensuing a fight to become the ultimate ruler of New Orleans.
While Klaus and Marcel managed to arrive at a mutual decision, Lucien's terror in Season 3 kick-started Marcel's temporary death at the hands of Elijah. Using his powerful serum, Lucien Castle transformed himself into an 'Upgraded Original ', bringing a reign of terror upon the family.
Since the serum granted him unlimited power and made him immune to traditional vampire killing, the Mikaelsons allowed the sacrifice of Davina Claire to kill Lucien.
While they successfully defeated Lucien, the anguish over Davina's death turns Marcel against the Mikaelsons for good. In The Originals Season 3 Episode 'Give 'Em Hell Kid', the dynamic between Marcel and the Mikaelsons comes to a head, which leads Elijah to take the final action against him. He rips out Marcel's heart from his body, leading to his death in the river.
The Originals: Marcel's death led to his transformation into the Beast
While Marcel's death in The Originals Season 3 was a big turning point, Elijah and the other Mikaelsons were unaware that he had already taken Lucien's serum, and the killing would only escalate his transformation process. This reverse-engineered serum, carefully created under Lucien's guidance, contained a part of Mikaelson's blood and the venom of the seven original werewolf bloodlines.
Making Marcel immune to the traditional ways of a vampire killing, ie, ripping out of their hearts, he emerged 'un-dead' from the river soon after in The Originals Season 3.
His beastly resurrection was so powerful and ghastly that Klaus feared him, and Elijah felt guilty upon unleashing this monstrosity on his family. After becoming this upgraded, unkillable super-vampire stronger than the Originals, Marcel became invincible and even captured Klaus in a dungeon, avenging the family for Davina's death.
In the series' final season, while he eventually becomes the new ruler of New Orleans, he chooses to leave for New York after getting engaged to Rebekah Mikaelson.
