The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox on Hulu revisits the infamous trail of Amanda, who was accused of murdering her roommate Meredith and had to spend four years in prison before being acquitted. As a 20 year old who went to study in Perugia, Italy, Amanda’s life changed overnight when she became the prime suspect in the murder of her roommate Meredith Kercher.
The murder, which happened in 2007, eventually led to the imprisonment of both Amanda and her then boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, with whom she claimed to be with when the murder happened. After they were put behind the bars in 2009, they were ultimately acquitted in 2015 after an appeal was made.
Despite having such a horrid time in Italy as The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox vividly shows, what is interesting is Amanda’s going back to the country. She made a recent trip back there in 2022 and even before that, she had gone back to Italy multiple times. In 2022, she went back to meet prosecutor Giuliano Mignini, who was the man responsible for putting her behind the bars.
Amanda Knox visited Italy in 2022 to meet Giuliano Mignini in The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox
Giuliano Mignini remains a crucial figure in The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox as it was because of him that her life almost got ruined completely. She had to spend four years in prison because the prosecutor Giuliano Mignini was absolutely certain that it was Amanda and her boyfriend who were behind the murder.
Talking about her decision to go back to Italy and meet Giuliano Mignini, Amanda told PEOPLE:
“I think that’s an important point to make as I’m not a person whose faith, for example, compels them to forgive. That was not my goal. My goal was to understand him… there was this deep curiosity in me to try to understand this person who decided that I was a dangerous person, who deserved to spend the most years of my life in prison.”
On the same topic, she told The Guardian in an interview:
“I was haunted by this ‘Why?’ question. Why did this happen to me? If they had done their job correctly, I would be a footnote in Meredith’s story.”
Amanda and Giuliano Mignini’s meeting, which Catholic Priest Don Saulo Scarabattoli had facilitated, also left a deep impression on Mignini. After some four months of meeting with Amanda, Mignini told The Telegraph:
“Amanda has changed a lot and I think I can say that I know her. She was defamed by the British tabloids and presented like a Circe but really she is a normal girl from the West.”
Mignini’s words show how he now sees Amanda in a different light and how the two, despite their previous tumultuous relationship have now formed a unique bond.
