AMC's popular post-apocalyptic horror series, The Walking Dead: Dead City, is finally back after two years. The second season dropped on May 4, 2025. Created by Eli Jorne, this series takes place five to six years after the events of The Walking Dead series' finale. It follows the journey of the fan favourite reformed villain Negan Smith (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and the badass survivor, Maggie Greene (Lauren Cohan).

Previously in The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 1, Maggie decided to trade Negan to rescue her son, Hershel (Logan Kim), from The Croat. The season starts with some power restoration work for New York City. In fact, the Dama and the Croat depend on breaking down the walkers to generate the much-needed fuel, methane. Yes! The New Babylon Federation arrives, and Maggie takes a tough decision: The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 2 Episode 1

Maggie, Ginny, and Hershel go deer hunting, but Hershel misses a shot while Ginny is left injured. Before leaving for their settlement, Maggie notices a large moth. At their settlement, Maggie stares blankly at a NYC cap, feeling guilty about pushing Negan back to his old life (but she had no choice; she had to rescue her son). Meanwhile, the mother-son duo tries to reconnect with each other. While the viewers get a sneak peek of Hershel's missing toe.

Things turn interesting when the New Babylon Federation – a militarized faction aiming to restore order arrives at Maggie's settlement, The Bricks. The organization is led by Governor Byrd (Jasmine Walker) and the ruthless Major Lucia Narvaez (Dascha Polanco). The New Babylon Federation announces a plan to recruit soldiers from Maggie's settlement. Their objective? To gain control of the methane-powered city from the Dama and the Croat, and restore Manhattan to its old form.

Maggie seems quite disinterested, but when her old ally, Marshal Perlie Armstrong (Gauis Charles), recommends her for the mission, she has no way out but to obey. However, Maggie isn't a fool, she strikes a deal with the federation – that if she joins from The Bricks, no one else from the settlement will be joining the army.

Well, there's a final step that Maggie needs to complete to get recruited. To prove her worth, she is thrown to fight against several Walkers. After an intense and nail-biting fight, Maggie proves her worth to Perlie, Luca, and Governor Bryd. The victory secures her place in the army and saves the rest of the people in The Bricks, but it comes at a cost she has to leave her son Hershel behind.

Meanwhile, Negan is spending his time in a cramped cell and surviving on cockroaches and insects, resisting The Croat and The Dama's demands. They want him to unite Manhattan's factions of the lawless survivors against the incoming New Babylon threat, but he refuses- until The Dama reveals she knows the whereabouts of his son and wife.

Negan agrees to their demands finally and dons his infamous leather jacket and a new electrified Lucille a gift from the croat. This symbolizes that the situations have pushed Negan back to his past monstrous self, which he was trying to avoid for such a long time. In a chilling church sermon, he intimidates the rival faction leaders using fear to secure their loyalty.

Hershel's hidden agenda A revenge plot brewing?

While Maggie prepares to leave for Manhattan with the Federation, Hershel seems quite annoyed. He secretly practices his knife-throwing skills and even causes his mother to join the federation to meet Negan in Manhattan. Well, what's fascinating is Hershel stares at the sketch of The Dama-hinting at some unfinished business.

Will Hershel follow Maggie to Manhattan to seek revenge against The Dama?
