The Winning Try Episode 1-2 recap: Ju Ga-ram comes back as the rugby coach to his former high school
Episode 1 of The Winning Try begins with showing glimpses of Ju Ga-ram scoring for Korea against Japan, but the celebration is cut short due to the doping scandal and his eventual retirement. Three years later, he joins as a rugby coach and returns to his former high school.
However, Ga-ram has to go through many hurdles to become a coach to this team, which is barely hanging by a thread, due to their weak performances. From the school Vice Principal to all the other coaches, no one is happy seeing the defamed player as a coach in their school.
But it's the team and captain Yun Seong-jun (Kim Yo-han) that are the most displeased with the new coach as apart from being the most hated athlete in all of Korea, he cannot even help them in their college applications due to him being fired from the union, which prompts the captain to vote for the removal of Ga-ram in The WinningTry.
The Winning Try Episode 1-2 recap: Even with not being accepted, Ga-ram gets to stay as the coach
At the end of episode 1 of The Winning Try, Ga-ram makes a perfect entry by throwing the rugby ball at the pigs’ head, replacing its nose for not including the rugby team in the Rite of Passage ceremony. The irate Vice Principal then decides to vote for the removal of Ga-ram, but fails again as many of the coaches vote to keep Ga-ram, making the vote equal, so that the rugby players don’t get assigned to their teams.
But it's not just Ga-ram but the whole rugby team that gets neglected time and again by the school authorities for not being able to win any of their matches. The Winning Try is not just about sports action and humor, as the first two episodes also showcased several emotional moments, and a love story that might begin with a break-up, in the case of Ga-ram and Yi-ji (Im Se-mi).
The relationship between the two is strained as, after his scandal, Ga-ram went AWOL and did not even inform her. Since they did not break up officially, Yi-ji decides to do that when he comes back to school. The love story is still not over, as while Yi-ji might have broken up with Ga-ram, they both still have a place for each other in their hearts, which we might see more of with their conversation in future episodes.
The Winning Try Episode 1-2 recap: The rugby team scores a point
After being back as the coach in episode 2 of The Winning Try, Ga-ram makes plans for the team and begins their training, but Seong-jun still hasn’t accepted him as the coach, which concerns Ga-ram. After a little push from his former teacher and now the Principal of the school, he goes to talk to him and bring him back.
Ga-ram asks Seong-jun if his hatred for him is more than his love for rugby, and requests him to play the game that they both love, as he will make sure that Seong-jun and the others do not take the wrong path like he did.
The plan of the Vice Principal and the shooting coach is to make Ga-ram appear worse as they arrange a match between the school’s rugby team and Daesang High’s team, which is at number 1. The team gets mad at Ga-ram for agreeing with the match as they have never won a game against Daesang.
However, Ga-ram tells them that they might not win against the best team on such short notice, but he will teach them how to lose well. On the match day in episode 2 of The Winning Try, Daesang High did not let the team score a single point in the first half.
But the second half brought a huge win for the team as Ga-ram reshuffled and changed the strategy of the team with first making them play defense and later finally to win the game. At the end of the game, the rugby team finally scored their first point, which is what Ga-ram meant when he told the team he would make them lose better, as the point did not make them win the whole game.
The team is happy with their win, against the best rugby team coached by their former coach in The Winning Try, depicting the beginning of a long way the team has to go with Ga-ram’s help.
