After the intense and entertaining premiere week, The Winning Try maintained the emotional narrative and action-packed scenes in the next two episodes as well. Finally scoring a point and ending their zero-point streak in the previous episodes should have brought some expected happiness to the rugby team.
However, with another cheap trick by the Vice Principal, the rugby team lost a valuable member, Tae-pung, who left to join Daesang High. This made the disbanding of the rugby team seem like a reality, but Ju Ga-ram was determined not to let that happen. Therefore, he went to look for a new player in episode 3 of The Winning Try to stop them from disbanding.
Therefore, amid overcoming additional challenges in Episode 4 of The Winning Try, the Rugby team secured their 7th player.
Here’s what happened in The Winning Try Episode 3-4.

The Winning Try Episode 3-4 recap: I-ji helps cover for Ju Ga-ram in his absence
Following the events of the previous episodes, the school began discussing disbanding the team and distributing its funds among other sports. But Ju Ga-ram tricked them by lying that he already had a new player and would bring him before the ceremony marking the start of the second semester.
To do that, he had to know about the special admissions applications to look for new candidates, and this task became difficult as only I-ji had the key to the locker. A small act of theft led Ga-ram to the police station after he stole the keys from I-ji’s office.
While he might be caught, he still managed to choose his next player and went straight to search for him, without informing his players. This forced the team to cover for their coach and tell the other teachers that he was suffering from COVID.
But Nak-gyeon, the shooting coach, did not trust this and went on to check about it himself. However, due to the team’s pleas, Seung-hui and I-ji stopped him, lying to Nak-gyeon to save their coach.
The Winning Try Episode 3-4 recap: Ju Ga-ram’s search takes him to Mun Cheol-young, a former rugby player
Episode 3 of The Winning Try took Ga-ram to a village in search of his 7th player, and after traveling for almost a day, he met Mun Ung. Just as he had scanned the physical abilities of his other players, he did the same with Ung and was impressed.
However, taking Ung with him was not going to be easy, as his father, Mun Cheol-young (Jung Gi-seop), a former rugby legend, was not on board with his son being an athlete. Cheol-young had to retire from rugby after a horrifying knee injury, due to which he did not want his son to go through the same fate and waste his whole life on a sport.
But Ung was fully interested and was holding himself back for his father, which Ga-ram caught on pretty quickly. After a minor scuffle between the two former players, Ga-ram finally confronted Cheol-young about letting Ung play the sport.
He told them that whatever happened to them was their mistake, as they did not trust their teammates enough and wanted to win the game alone, and rugby was not meant to be played alone; it was a team game. He asks Cheol-yung to let Ung play real rugby and not make the same mistakes that they had made. His speech moved the former player, and with an emotional farewell, he let his son go with Ga-ram and play the sport that he wanted to.
The Winning Try Episode 3-4 recap: Mun Ung and the rugby team go through many more hurdles
While Ga-ram reaches the opening ceremony on time in The Winning Try, he had no idea about the Vice Principal’s trick that he had already planned for him. He announced that they had changed the special admissions rules and regulations, and the new candidate must successfully score in three sports of the management's choosing to get admitted to the school.
The team then had to train Mun Ung in just a short period, as he geared up to face a test in the disciplines of rugby, fencing, and archery. With Ga-ram sneaking around the school to know about the weaknesses of the opponents and Seong-jun taking U-jin’s help to train Ung, they almost looked ready.
While Ung easily scored in rugby, he struggled a bit during the fencing test in Episode 4 of The Winning Try. But with the determination to score a point and encouragement from his future teammates, Ung scored a point and won two out of the three games.
However, their winning chances went down when they were informed about the last test, which would be shooting in place of archery, the last cheap trick of the Vice Principal to stop Ung’s admission. Since Ung was not prepared and trained for shooting, he scored only one point.
But Ga-ram’s supportive words to Mun Ung about not being stressed about winning worked wonders. In a moment of surprise, U-jin did something shocking when she purposefully lost the competition and congratulated Ung before stepping out of the event.
With U-jin’s loss, the rugby team gets their 7th player, which stops them from disbanding in The Winning Try.
