South Korean actor Lee Byung-hun (The Front Man) has received global praise and appreciation for his character in Netflix's Squid Game.
It is known that the Front Man was a police officer before he joined the games, and after he was unable to save his dying wife and their unborn child, he became the Front Man.
Since the show has featured snippets about the character's early life, there were even rumors that creator Hwang Dong-hyuk might develop a Squid Game spin-off focusing on the Front Man.
Putting these speculations to rest, Byung-hun has finally teased that a Front Man spin-off might be in the cards.
The actor recently appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, and during a yes/no game segment, when host Jimmy Fallon asked about a potential Front Man spin-off series, Byung-hun pressed the 'yes' button and said:
''There's a possibility and we'll never know what happens.''
With Byung-hun on board, another partnership with Dong-hyuk could likely result in a spin-off series.
More on this in our story.
Squid Game star Lee Byung-hun teases a Front Man spin-off
Fans have shown great interest in the mysterious mastermind behind the games, especially after he disguised himself as one of the players and entered the games to uncover and thwart Gi-hun's plans.
While Byung-hun's character was majorly hidden behind a mask in Season 1, the finale ended on the shocking reveal that he is none other than Hwang Jun-ho's elder half-brother, Hwang In-ho.
Squid Game Season 2 was the opportunity where Byung-hun shined as the Front Man and brought all the character nuances perfectly to life. While the character is portrayed as an antagonist in the series, there is more to his story than meets the eye.
While the fans are shown snippets about the other players' lives before the games, especially Gi-hun's, the Front Man's character remains a mystery, which has much potential for a Squid Game spin-off.
While the series has not yet explored much backstory about the character, Byung-hun imagined an origin story for the Front Man, which helped him while portraying the character on-screen, as he revealed in an interview with The Indian Express:
“The Front Man does seem utterly evil. But as an actor, I needed to understand him—his motives, his past. I imagined that behind the mask, there was still a trace of humanity.''
The Front Man's identity will finally be revealed to Gi-hun in Squid Game Season 3
One of the most anticipated moments for Squid Game Season 3 is the revelation of Front Man's identity to Gi-hun and the other players.
In Season 2, the Front Man disguised himself as Player 001 (Oh Young-il) and befriended Gi-hun and his team, even participating and winning games with them. During this time, Gi-hun naturally trusted 'Young-il' as he also revealed his sob story about his wife and children.
However, Gi-hun was unaware that Player 001 was disguised as the Front Man, who also killed his friend Jung-bae in the Squid Game Season 2 finale during the player revolt.
The latest trailer for the final season teased that Gi-hun will finally learn about the Front Man's identity, setting up for an emotional confrontation. Talking about his complicated relationship with Gi-hun, Byung-hun teased with The Indian Express:
“There may have been a part of him that was rooting for Gi Hun, because some part of him still wanted to believe in people.”
The final season will explore the main theme of the series, i.e., the goodness in humanity. While In-ho has lost his faith, he questions Gi-hun's faith in people in the trailer, setting up an exciting finale.
Squid Game Season 3 debuts on Netflix on June 27, 2025.
