Consisting of ten episodes, eight episodes of Dexter: Resurrection are available as of now. Resurrection has managed to win Dexter fans who have been burned since the fourth season. It follows Dexter, who is revived after being shot in the finale of New Blood. Now, he is a cab driver in New York, and tries to balance his life as a serial killer.
One of the major plot points of Resurrection is the serial killer group headed by Peter Dinklage's billionaire VC Leon Prater. While the group is introduced only in Dexter: Resurrection, several fans have realized that a monologue from the very first season coincidentally foreshadowed this group. The said monologue is from the seventh episode of the first season.
Titled Circle of Friends, the nineteen-year-old episode from 2006, opens with the following monologue from Dexter:
“The FBI estimates that there are less than 50 serial killers active in the United States today. We don’t get together at conventions, share trade secrets, or exchange Christmas cards. But sometimes I wonder what it’s like for the others.”
The significance of the monologue to Dexter: Resurrection explained:
Twenty years later, the people working on the series have finally shown what a get-together of serial killers looks like. We already know that Prater brought together all the serial killers under his mansion for a get-together where they discuss their methodology, and even offer their trophies to Prater. Lowell and Al/Rapunzel even gave a presentation regarding their methodologies.
Thus, it seems that Dexter: Resurrection has finally shown what a serial killer get-together in this fictional universe looks like. This move clearly shows that, despite being twenty years old, every unanswered idea from the original series could be answered in the future.
What is Dexter: Resurrection about?
As mentioned earlier, Resurrection is set just some time after the events of Dexter: New Blood. If you remember, the New Blood finale was intended to be the conclusion of the Dexter franchise. Walls are closing in on Dexter in that finale, and he kills one of the innocent police officers, breaking Harry's Code.
When Harrison points this out, Dexter sees the error of his ways and instructs the former to kill him. Harrison pulls the trigger, and Dexter bleeds out on the snow. Police Chief Angela Bishop reaches the scene and hands Harrison money to leave the town of Iron Lake and calls the medic to hospitalize Dexter.
As the opening scene of Dexter: Original Sin's first episode suggests, Dexter is revived in the hospital, setting up Dexter: Resurrection. Dexter wakes up ten weeks after the New Blood finale, and he escapes to New York to reconnect with Harrison. Resurrection will see the Bay Harbor Butcher in a new setting as he:
“Sets out for New York City, determined to find [Harrison] and make things right. But closure won’t come easy. When Miami Metro’s Angel Batista (David Zayas) arrives with questions, Dexter realizes his past is catching up to him fast. As father and son navigate their own darkness in the city that never sleeps, they soon find themselves deeper than they ever imagined – and that the only way out is together.”
The ninth and tenth episodes of Resurrection will be released on August 29, 2025, and September 5, 2025, respectively.
