A couple of days ago, it was announced that Mid-Century Modern had been canceled by Hulu after just one season. The comedy series, starring Matt Bomer, Nathan Lane, and Nathan Lee Graham, told the story of three middle-aged gay friends who move in together.

The dynamics between the three actors were well appreciated by the audience, and fans were left disappointed with Hulu’s decision. But the cast is now moving on, as Nathan Lane has landed another ambitious project after the cancellation of Mid-Century Modern.

The acclaimed actor has joined the cast of the upcoming comedy film, Cut Off. The movie stars Jonah Hill and Kristen Wiig as two spoiled siblings whose parents stop supporting their lavish lifestyles, leading to chaos.

The news of Nathan Lane joining Cut Off comes just days after Mid-Century Modern was axed by Hulu. In the film, which is being bankrolled by Warner Bros., Nathan will play the father of Jonah Hill and Kristen Wiig. Bette Midler will star as his wife.

Directed by Hill, the movie is all set to hit the theaters on July 17, 2026. The filming of the project is soon slated to begin in California. Hill has co-written the script and is producing the project film with Matt Dines and Ali Goodwin.

Meanwhile, Nathan Lane is not new to the big screen. He has already starred in films like The Vanishing of Sidney Hall, The English Teacher, The Nutcracker, Mirror Mirror, and Dicks: The Musical.

He has also lent his voice to various characters in animated movies like Spellbound, Astro Boy, Teacher's Pet, The Lion King, and Stuart Little 2. During his five-decade-long screen career, Lane has received multiple accolades, including three Emmy wins and two Golden Globe nominations.

In Mid-Century Modern, Nathan Lane starred as Bunny Schneiderman, the wealthiest of his trio of friends, who invites his close buddies, Jerry and Arthur, to live with him in his Palm Springs mansion so that they can spend their golden years together. Meanwhile, Bunny’s mother, Sybil, also resides with them, which leads to some chaotic and humorous situations.

Created by Max Mutchnick and David Kohan, the show premiered on Hulu on March 28, 2025, and earned positive reviews from critics, but failed to gather a massive viewership, which is said to be the reason behind its cancellation. After Hulu announced its decision, Mutchnick took to Instagram to thank his team and the show’s fans. He posted a picture with the production crew on Instagram and wrote:

“Ten great episodes… Not enough. But we loved making every single one of them. We’re gonna miss our very special show. Thanks to everyone who watched.”

Apart from Lane, the sitcom stars Matt Bomer as Jerry Frank, Nathan Lee Graham as Arthur Broussard, and the late Linda Lavin as Sybil Schneiderman. The supporting cast includes Pamela Adlon as Mindy Schneiderman, Zane Phillips as Mason, and Richard Kind as Caroll Mintz.

Mid-Century Modern is available to stream on Hulu.
