This scene in The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 2 has me convinced that Negan is already on a redemption path

After killing Glenn (Steven Yeun) in The Walking Dead, Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) unexpectedly started a redemption arc, revealing notable character evolution. This shift naturally endeared him further to fans, and as he takes on a leading role in the spin-off Walking Dead: Dead City, his character development is even more pronounced.

Glenn's widow, Maggie (Lauren Cohan), is another protagonist in Walking Dead: Dead City. While she does not trust Negan or believe that he is truly a changed man, the duo has been getting along in one way or another.

Walking Dead: Dead City Season 2 has revealed that Maggie and Negan are currently separated, with Maggie drafted by New Babylon and Negan held captive in Manhattan. However, the two briefly cross paths in Dead City Season 2 Episode 2, and the way Negan saves Hershel, Maggie's son, demonstrates that he is already on the path to redemption and that his changes are genuine.

Negan risks his own life to save Hershel in Walking Dead: Dead City Season 2 Episode 2

In Walking Dead: Dead City Season 2 Episode 2, Hershel attempts to sneak onto the mission that led to his mother's drafting. However, the troops ignore Maggie's warning about the potential attack from the Croat, which indeed occurs. Maggie is unaware that Negan is in charge, and he allows Hershel to escape before shooting at the boat.

Negan's behavior contrasts sharply with what viewers expect, indicating that he is genuinely changing and shows care for both Hershel and Maggie. Given that Negan has already caused Maggie great pain by killing Glenn, he is determined not to make the same mistake with Hershel, as that would only lead to more suffering for Maggie.

Negan's restraint before following an order indicates that he has already begun his journey toward redemption. If this were the old Negan, he wouldn't have paused for even a second before firing. However, Walking Dead: Dead City Season 2 Episode 2 makes it clear that Negan is changing, and that change is for the better.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan himself said in an interview with Screen Rant,

“With Dead City, I don't know that it's the last year at all, but I think it's forming this character who, when we first met him, was the worst person in the world. And as time has gone by, we see a different side of him.”

As the show proceeds, it would be interesting to see where Negan's redemption arc finally takes him and how it affects his relationship with his fellow characters.

Walking Dead: Dead City can be streamed on Netflix.
