True Detective Season 5: Everything we know so far about the upcoming chapter of the crime drama

The new installment of the acclaimed HBO crime drama, True Detective Season 5, is said to be in the works. As reported by Deadline, Nicolas Cage is in talks to appear in the upcoming season. However, it has not yet been finalized.

In addition, Deadline also reported that the new season will be set in New York, and the Ghost Rider actor might play the character of Detective Henry Logan.

True Detective Season 5: Cast, streaming, and plot details

As mentioned, Nicholas Cage might headline the new season of the HBO series, which is set in Jamaica Bay, New York. No other character or actor has been revealed yet.

Like every other season, True Detective Season 5 will also be available to watch on HBO Max. While the upcoming series will introduce a new and chilling murder case, in a new location, with brand new characters, the showrunner of Season 4, Issa López, revealed that there will still be some connection between True Detective: Night Country.

While talking to the New York Post in December 2024, she revealed:

"There’s going to be some important connections between everything that happens in Ennis, Alaska, and the characters in Ennis, Alaska, and what happens in the new [season]. That said, it’s a new story, new characters, everything."

In Night Country, Emmy-winner Foster appeared as Liz Danvers, who was investigating the disappearance and later deaths of eight scientists in the sombre town of Ennis in Alaska. She is accompanied by Evangeline Navarro, played by Kali Reis, with whom she had a complex relationship.

Further, HBO’s Head of Drama Series and Film, Francesca Orsi, also commented about her excitement and López’s work on the new series and said:

"Issa has a lot to say, not unlike she did with Night Country. It’s a different milieu but just as powerful. I’m really excited about it. We have a small writers room going with Issa; she’s excited. We just gave notes on the first two episodes, the entire season. Honestly, I can’t wait for this to go. It’s all about casting and getting this ready."

More about True Detective Season 5

As per the Deadline report, True Detective Season 5 might begin filming in 2026 and will be released in 2027. The acclaimed series began with Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as the leads in season 1. Later, Collin Farrell, Mahershala Ali, and, most recently, Jodie Foster led their respective seasons.

Showrunners Issa López and Francesca Orsi’s comments suggest that just like the previous installments, the new anthology series will also depict a new and spine-chilling murder case, which might also have links with the previous series.

The series will be the second TV show in Nicolas Cage’s filmography, with the upcoming Spider-Man Noir series being the first.
