Ballard premiered on Amazon Prime on July 9, 2025, with all its 10 episodes dropping simultaneously. A spin-off of Bosch and Bosch: Legacy, the show focuses on the character of Detective Renée Ballard, played by Maggie Q. The official synopsis of the show, as per Rotten Tomatoes, mentions

“Ballard continues to bring Michael Connelly's bestselling novels to life, following Detective Renée Ballard (Q) as she leads the LAPD's new and underfunded cold case division, tackling the city’s most challenging long-forgotten crimes with empathy and relentless determination.”

The synopsis further mentions,

“As she peels back layers of crimes spanning decades, including a serial killer's string of murders and a murdered John Doe, she soon uncovers a dangerous conspiracy within the LAPD. With the help of her volunteer team and retired detective Harry Bosch (Titus Welliver), Detective Ballard navigates personal trauma, professional challenges, and life-threatening dangers to expose the truth.”

With the show completely focusing on Ballard and how she navigates her personal and professional life, her colleagues naturally play an important role. One of her colleagues, Ken Chastain, plays an important role, with whom Ballard is shown to have a confrontation in episode 3.

Unfortunately, before their conflict can be resolved, Chastain meets an unfortunate end, the news of which reaches Ballard when she is in the middle of an important meeting.

Ken Chastain dies in an accident in Ballard

As Ballard and her team are holding an important meeting about the John Doe bullet, Laffont brings the news of Chastain’s death. He died in a drunk driving incident, and while it is evident that the news has deeply affected Ballard, she quickly regains herself. Given her history with Chastain, who did not stand by her during her assault case, Ballard first decided not to go to his funeral, but eventually changed her decision.

Going to Chastain’s funeral marks an important point in the storyline, as after reaching there, Ballard meets his widow, who tells her that her husband’s last few months were spent feeling extreme guilt for what he did to Ballard. This further raises the conflicting feelings in Ballard as she remembers that Chatain had apologised to her previously in a drunken state, though she did not accept the apology.

Ballard’s presence at the funeral also led to further complications as she came to know of another woman who was also assaulted. She also met Robert Olivas there with Laffont and Parker by her side. While going to the funeral was an especially hard decision for Ballard, it ultimately resulted in a positive choice given the personal and professional revelations that she came across there.

Ballard can be streamed on Prime Video.
