BBC One's beloved historical drama, Poldark, premiered in April 2015 and ran for 5 seasons, wrapping up in 2019. The series is adapted from Winston Graham's novel and follows the story of Ross Poldark, played by Aidan Turner. The series narrates Ross's return to Cornwall after the 1783 Revolutionary War of the Americans.
Throughout the series, there were numerous celebratory moments and moments of heartbreak due to the shocking deaths of fan-favorite characters. One such death was Francis Poldark's death in Season 2, Episode 5. The death was more heartwrenching as it happened right after he revealed that he wanted to make amends with Ross, and also found copper in the Wheal Grace mine by drowning in a pool.
More on this in our story.
What happens to Francis in Poldark? Details explored in depth

Ross and Francis's relationship had been complicated after Elizabeth chose the latter over Ross. However, in Episode 5 of Poldark Season 2, Francis, played by Kyle Soller, decided to change it. He told Demelza (Eleanor Tomlinson) that he wanted to improve his relationship with his Ross and talk to him, which was supposed to be a hopeful reunion of the cousins.
However, Francis did not get a chance to talk to Ross later. While he had an eventful episode, near the end of the episode, Francis made a terrible mistake. Ross went to the Wheal Grace mine alone and began digging and looking out, and later also found Copper. However, he did not get a chance to share this news with Ross.
After finding the copper, he fell into a pool, just before Ross arrived. Since Ross was unable to arrive on time, Francis drowned and died in the pool, leaving Demelza as the only person who knew about the copper that he had found in the mines.
While Francis's death has been teased since the premiere of Poldark, the timing of his death was what shocked and hurt the viewers. Just when Francis was about to make amends in his relationships, he promised his son to read him a bedtime story, and even gave a piece of advice to George Warleggan (Jack Farthing), and found Copper in the mines that he and Ross owned.
However, at the end of the episode, he did not get to keep his promise to his son or talk to Ross and accept his mistakes.
Other than Francis's death, the episode also marks the beginning of Caroline and Dwight's relationship as they confess to each other about their feelings, and Caroline breaks off her engagement.
Along with Aidan Turner and Kyle Soller, the BBC One series also includes a stellar ensemble cast such as Eleanor Tomlinson, Beatie Edney, Luke Norris, Gabriella Wilde, Jack Farthing, Tristan Sturrock, Tim Dutton, Christian Brassington, Pip Torrens, and Heida Reed.
