Andor Season 2 heavily featured rhydonium in its fifth episode. For the uninitiated, in the Star Wars Universe, rhydonium is a fuel that's used in the Starships. A highly volatile fuel, rhydonium can double as an explosive in The Galaxy Far Far Away as well. In this episode of Andor, Saw has Wilmon Paak teach one of his men, Pluti learn how the mysterious rhydonium device functions.

Pluti turns out to be an Imperial spy, and Saw has him killed in the last act of this Andor Season 2 episode. Later, in the closing minutes of this episode, Saw has Wilmon install the mysterious device at a mysterious target. While the device isn't used, we know that being a rhydonium-powered device, it is meant to serve as an explosive in an upcoming episode of season 2, either coming Tuesday or the one after that.

Why is Andor Season 2's Rhydonium important in the Star Wars Universe?

It was surprising to hear talk about rhydonium in the fifth Andor Season 2 episode. That's because until now, Andor in general, has featured hardly anything from the wider Star Wars Universe. This is not the first time that rhydonium factored into a Star Wars project. Previously, it played a role in other Star Wars stories like the comic Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures, Star Wars: Rebels, The Mandalorian Season 2, and Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

The first time Star Wars fans were introduced to rhydonium before Andor Season 2 was in the seventh episode of The Mandalorian Season 2. In that episode, Din Djarin/The Mandalorian takes the help of Migs Mayfeld (Bill Burr) to locate Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito)'s ship to rescue Grogu/Baby Yoda. At one point in this episode, a barrel of rhydonium is used as an explosive.

Throughout the fifth episode of Andor Season 2, Wilmon is working on a complex explosive device that's powered by the starship powering fuel. Wil is teaching Pluti the different combinations of the device. But Pluti is revealed to be a traitor, and Saw kills him in front of Wil and the other rebels of Saw's group. Thus, Wil takes Pluti's place and installs the explosive in a mysterious location.

But while doing so, Saw inhales the fuel, something that's impossible for other people in the Star Wars Universe. People working with rhydonium usually wear protective gear, something Saw Gerrera doesn't because he is supposedly immune to its toxic aftereffects.

What's next for Wilmon in Andor Season 2?

Wilmon's character experiences a major breakthrough in the fifth episode of Andor Season 2, "I Have Friends Everywhere". At the end of the fifth episode, Saw Gerrera encourages Wil to embrace the way of the revolutionaries and take off the protective gear. Wil does so, but we don't see him in the sixth episode of season 2. Thus, it remains to be seen how this moment will affect Wil.
