When Tracker Season 3 premieres on October 19 on CBS, viewers will notice the absence of two key cast members. The newest entry in the procedural will bid goodbye to two core members in Justin Hartley's Colter's team, Bobby (Eric Graise) and Velma (Abby McEnany).
Bobby and Velma have remained Colter's respective hacker and handler for two seasons, but will not return in the upcoming season. In an interview with TVLine, showrunner Elwood Reid has assured fans that Season 3 of Tracker will explain both of these absences and Colter's team will undergo some changes.
Since both Bobby and Velma were beloved and core characters in the procedural, their exits will surely affect Tracker Season 3. However, guest appearances by Jensen Ackles' Russell Shaw and Brent Sexton's Keaton will keep the show's narrative exciting.
More on this in our story.
Exploring cast changes in Tracker Season 3
Colter Shaw will return with a changed (and smaller) team in Tracker Season 3, as both Bobby and Velma will not be featured in the upcoming season. While our tracker was introduced as a lone wolf in Season 1, he learned to operate with a team and found stability with Bobby, Velma and Reenie. However, this stability and found family will be disrupted with Bobby and Velma's absence in Season 3 of Tracker.
While the CBS procedural has managed to prove its worth on the small screen, these major casting changes threaten to shift the foundations of its success. Colter takes on a new case in every episode but audiences tune in every week to watch their favorite (and familiar) characters. However, with Bobby and Velma gone, the upcoming season will have to prove its worth without two of its main characters.
In most procedural shows, the unpredictability of new cases is always balanced with the stability of the core team. However, Tracker continues to risk this basic premise by changing the core team every season. After Robin Weigert's Teddi Bruin's exit in Season 1 and Bobby and Velma's exit ahead of Tracker Season 3, Fiona Rene (Reenie) is the only original member to be featured in the upcoming season, who also happens to be Colter's love interest.
Chris Lee to have an expanded role in Tracker Season 3
While Tracker Season 3 is losing two of its main cast members, Chris Lee's Randy will have an expanded role. Introduced as Bobby's cousin, Randy debuted in Tracker Season 2 as Colter's new hacker. Lee's character quickly became a fan-favorite and received positive reviews, following which he will have an expanded role in the upcoming season and will work alongside Reenie.
After Reenie's company breach and kidnapping, she will naturally need a security net and Randy will provide that helping hand in Tracker Season 3, as teased by Reid to TVLine:
''One of the things that she does is she brings Randy out to get her security up to snuff. That sparks a conversation about him perhaps sticking around and working out of her office — both with Colter and helping her with her law practice.''
He added:
“Having Chris Lee in the same space that Fiona Rene is in just gets you [more]. The stuff we’ve seen so far is so much fun. It has made a huge difference. Now, when Colter calls, it feels like he’s calling into something already in motion. This is all part of my ‘evil plan’ to use Fiona more — the more you can build out her world, the more the show benefits.”
Reid's comments suggest that while Tracker Season 3 will feature two major cast changes, the show will also invest in new characters and relationships like Randy. Since Randy has already proven his worth in the previous season, he will have a bigger role and will also expand on Reenie's world and her relationship with Colter.
Tracker will resume with Season 3 on CBS on Sunday, October 19.
