Squid Game Season 3 will mark the final chapter of the show

While fans had to wait for almost four years for Season 2, Squid Game Season 3 is hitting Netflix just six months after the Season 2 finale. Considering huge projects like Stranger Things take a lot of time between their seasons, the wait period between Squid Game Seasons 2 and 3 is admirable.

However, the actual reason behind this is that creator Hwang Dong-hyuk initially envisioned Seasons 2 and 3 as a single outing. But when the story demanded more episodes, the creator decided to split the show into two seasons.

It was also reported that both seasons were shot simultaneously, but are being released within a gap of six months.

The Season 2 finale felt abrupt and incomplete because the story was written in continuation. However, Dong-hyuk decided to end Season 2 with the Player's revolt because it was a turning point in Gi-hun's story arc.

Talking about the natural point of entry in Squid Game Season 3 with Deadline, Dong-hyuk noted:

''When I was writing the script for the two seasons, I felt like there was a big turning point or an inflection point, and that was the end of episode seven, so I thought that it would do it justice to have a separate season after that. That’s why I had first seven episodes as Season 2 and then the rest of Season 3.''

In addition to a potential conclusion to Gi-hun and the other players' stories, the final season will also explore the larger themes of the show it has touched upon since Season 1.

The trailer for Season 3 teases a showdown between the Front Man and Gi-hun, where the former questions his faith in humanity, bringing the larger themes of the show to a full circle close.

Catch the third season of Squid Game on Netflix on June 27, 2025.
