The recent episode of Chief of War showed the natives of the Hawaiian kingdoms how dangerous the foreign forces are.
While Momoa’s Ka’iana is aware of the extent of how terrifying Metcalfe and his crew are, Kamehameha is still under the impression that he can make the foreigners leave the land without any violence.
Ka’iana has a different opinion in this regard, and in Episode 7, he even goes to kill Metcalfe and Marley to protect his land and people. However, he is stopped by the king, who comes to know about Ka’iana’s plan through the latter’s wife, Kupuohi.
In a moment of feeling insecure about her husband’s closeness toward Kamehameha’s wife, Kupuohi betrays Ka’iana and reveals his plan to the king.
More on this in our story.
Chief of War: Kupuohi betrays her husband
In Episode 7 of Chief of War, Ka’iana tries to make Kamehameha understand the danger of Metcalfe and his crew’s staying in their lands. He and Tony tell him about how they practise slavery and torture other human beings. He tries to convey to the King that they are just savages in the eyes of Metcalfe and his people.
Therefore, they have to protect their culture, land, and people from them. However, Kamehameha does not want to fight with someone who has not attacked them and follows the new law. This doesn’t sit well with Ka’iana, and he takes a handful of warriors to kill Captain Metcalfe and Marley, but is interrupted by Kamehameha.
A furious Ka’iana initially thinks it was his brother who revealed his plan to the King, as only his family was aware of his plan. However, it is later discovered that it was Ka’iana’s wife, Kupuohi, who disclosed his plan to the king.
Kupuohi found herself in a predicament when Ka’iana returned. She had moved on with his brother, Namake, thinking Ka’iana was dead. However, he returned, and she went back to him, leaving Namake. Furthermore, she has also noticed how close Ka’iana and Kamehameha’s wife, Ka’ahumanu, have become.
This adds to her already complicated situation, and she betrays her husband by revealing his plan to the king.
Chief of War: Consequences of sparing Metcalfe’s life
Kupuohi’s betrayal became a boon for Metcalfe as his life was spared by Kamehameha’s interruption in Episode 7 of Chief of War. Furthermore, Ka’iana’s words might have affected Kamehameha a little as he tries to solve the issue of Metcalfe in his own way.
He sends John Young with a message that Metcalfe should go away from their shore with his crew. While Metcalfe agrees to follow Kamehameha’s message and leaves their village, he still ends up turning Ka’iana’s worst nightmares into reality.
At the end of the episode, Metcalfe and his crew reach the shore of a peaceful village, where Vai also resides, and begin firing at them. This massacre brings the real intention of Metcalfe to the fore as he destroys the whole village.
