George Russell may have survived the attempt on his life in The Gilded Age Season 3's seventh episode, "Ex-Communicated", but as of now, we don't know who is the person responsible for attempting to kill Russell. Thus, it seems that the season 3 finale has set up an interesting plot line for the fourth season, which we know is happening.
One of the things that confused the fans in the season 3 finale of The Gilded Age is the quick pace at which Russell recovered. The episode opens with him being transported swiftly for his gunshot wound, and a few scenes later, George Russell is healthier than someone who has been shot. However, this quick recovery can be explained.
The subtle time jump in The Gilded Age Season 3 finale may explain George Russell's recovery:
As mentioned before, people are confused as to how Russell recovered as fast as he did in the season 3 finale. But, there is an explanation in the episode itself if you watch it carefully. The episode picks up right where the previous one left off. George is tended to his gunshot wound inside a carriage by Dr. William Kirkland (Jordan Donica). However, he has recovered in just a couple of scenes.
These two different scenes jarred a lot of viewers because they believed that these two scenes take place very close to each other Chronologically. However, the answer to the quick recovery lies in a trope that The Gilded Age usually uses, that of time jumps.
Actor Morgan Spector hopes that season four will focus on how this assassination attempt will change George:
George Russell actor Morgan Spector in The Gilded Age sat down for an interview with Deadline on August 10, 2025. In that interview, the actor revealed his hopes for where George should be in the fourth season. The actor's exact words were:
“I think the story of George’s bounce back from the assassination attempt would be the story, at least for me, of Season 4. I would love to see what happens, but yeah, I think there were moments when these guys decided that they were gonna maybe start treating their workers a little better, or maybe start investing more in philanthropy or something like that. I’d be curious to see.”
