Fans and critics noticed that Dexter: Resurrection was lighter than the original series when it returned this July. This new tone may have been due to the fan response to the previous Dexter spin-off, Dexter: New Blood. While New Blood stripped Dexter Morgan of all the symbolism fans associated with the character, Dexter: Resurrection brought back everything that fans missed.

How Dexter: New Blood led to Dexter: Resurrection?

On the surface, Dexter: New Blood was a "deconstruction" of the entire Dexter franchise. New Blood began with a lot of promise that saw the Bay Harbor Butcher in a completely new setting as the storyline moved from Miami to the small town of Iron Lake. Dexter is living under the alias of Jim Lindsay, working as a clerk in a local store.

But an incident involving the Caldwell family makes Dexter resort to his old ways after a decade-long hiatus from killing since the original series' finale. Unlike the original show, New Blood seemed to portray Dexter and his methods in a more critical light as the series suggests that the Bay Harbor Butcher's violent ways endangered his loved ones.

The series ended with Harrison Morgan shooting his father (on the latter's insistence). Showrunner Clyde Phillips addressed the supposed end of Dexter in a January 2022 Deadline interview. When asked if Dexter needed to die at the end of New Blood, Phillips responded:

"Yes. We knew this had to happen, and I think it had to happen for the audience as much as for the character. To see him get caught time and time again and get out of it at a time and time again is a disservice to the audience. And I think there’s a certain truth in this storytelling, in authenticity in the storytelling. So early on when I went to go and speak with Michael, it was about two and a half years ago in early July 2019, I told him my ideas. We met after I received a call from Showtime president Gary Levine who told me they were interested in revisiting this. Michael gave me a big hug and told me, “I’m in.” He knew how this would end."

Both fans and critics liked New Blood until the finale, which was regarded as the weakest episode of the series. There were also talks about a second season following Harrison, but those plans were scrapped in favor of Dexter: Resurrection. Resurrection won fans over with a lighter tone, which contrasted the dark and sombre tone of New Blood. Resurrection Season 1 followed Dexter as he:

“Sets out for New York City, determined to find [Harrison] and make things right. But closure won’t come easy. When Miami Metro’s Angel Batista (David Zayas) arrives with questions, Dexter realizes his past is catching up to him fast. As father and son navigate their own darkness in the city that never sleeps, they soon find themselves deeper than they ever imagined – and that the only way out is together.”
