The Abandons is Netflix's latest gritty Western drama series starring Lena Heady and Gillian Anderson as two rival matriarchs locked in a brutal land war against the ruthless backdrop of the American frontier in the late 1800s.

While Constance Van Ness (Anderson) is backed by her clan, Fiona Nolan (Heady) stands strong with her army of adoptive children and the other Jasper Hollow homesteaders, namely the Aldertons, led by their patriarch, Miles Alderton.

If Miles Alderton from The Abandons looks instantly familiar, you’re not imagining it. The actor behind the sharp-witted and quietly intense character has been on your screen more times than you might realize. That sense of déjà vu comes from a career built on standout performances across genres by actor Ryan Hurst, who plays Miles in the series.

If the name still does not ring a bell, Ryan Hurst is one of the leading men in FX's 2008 crime series Sons of Anarchy, who plays the character of Harry, Jax Teller's (Charlie Hunnam) childhood friend.

More on this in our story.

Ryan Hurst plays Miles Alderton in The Abandons

The Abandons marks a reunion between creator Kurt Sutter and his critically-acclaimed series' Sons of Anarchy' leading man, Ryan Hurst, who plays Miles Alderton in the latest Netflix Western.

Ryan Hurst started his professional journey on the small screen with NBC's 1993 teen drama series Saved by the Bell: The New Class, where he played the character of Crunch Grabowski. Hurst continued to build his resume with dramatic performances in shows like USA Network's sitcom Campus Cops, 2002 sci-fi series Taken, TNT's primetime police drama series Wanted and CBS' supernatural drama series Medium.

The Abandons star finally debuted in his breakthrough role as Harry "Opie" Winston in Sutter's gritty action crime drama series Sons of Anarchy on FX in 2008. A loyal member of the titular motorcycle club, Harry was Jax's best friend and the son of founder Piney.

Ryan Hurst's career picked up pace and he appeared in a variety of small-screen titles like A&E's psychological horror series Bates Motel, WGN America's drama series Outsiders and Prime Video's popular police procedural Bosch.

The star again made headlines in 2019 when he bagged the role of the ruthless villain Beta, the second-in-command of the Whisperers, in AMC's horror drama series The Walking Dead. Beta is one of the most popular characters from the comic books, who was perfectly brought on-screen by Ryan Hurst.

The Abandons star recently bagged a BAFTA Award nomination for his portrayal of the Norse god Thor in the 2022 video game God of War Ragnarök.

Some of Ryan Hurst's popular big-screen roles include Remember the Titans, We Were Soldiers and Superman: Man of Tomorrow.

Miles Alderton harbored a big secret in The Abandons

Miles Alderton became an unlikely ally to Fiona and her clan in The Abandons after Constance Van Ness laid out her plan to usurp Jasper Hollow from its settlers. While Miles was initially skeptical of Fiona's defiance against Constance and wanted the four hollow homesteaders to sell their respective lands to the Van Ness family and live in peace, he and his daughter, Samara, eventually became loyal supporters.

However, in The Abandons finale, Garret revealed a harrowing secret about Miles' life to Samara to gain leverage over Fiona and her land. Garret revealed that Miles' actual name is Adam Winston, a wanted fugitive who used to run with a gang, until he met Samara's mother and married her. While Adam changed his identity (to Miles) and settled in Jasper Hollow with his family, he was always concerned about his past, which finally came to light in front of his daughter in the finale.

Miles' secret changed the course of Fiona and Constance's land war and forced Samara into revealing the location of Willem's body to Garret, which directly led to the burning of the Van Ness estate.

Now that the Van Ness estate is burned down to shambles, the family will likely avenge the Hollow settlers and blackmail Miles into working for them if The Abandons is renewed for another season.
