Peacemaker Season 2 introduced another popular DCU character in a cameo role and maintained its string of surprising fans. However, the latest episode's inclusion of Nicholas Hoult's Lex Luthor has left fans more excited than ever.
In a new Deadline interview, James Gunn, the showrunner of the show, shared how crucial Hoult's cameo is in Peacemaker Season 2. Gunn shared that Rick Flag Sr. striking a deal with Luthor was not just a big moment for Peacemaker but also for the whole DCU. He said:
"So, we have a really important moment, for not only Peacemaker, but the entire DCU, in that Rick Flag, the head of ARGUS, strikes a deal basically with Lex Luthor."
More on this in our story.
Peacemaker Season 2: James Gunn's comments on Nicholas Hoult's crucial role in the series
Episode 6 of Peacemaker Season 2 premiered on September 25, 2025. In the episode, Rick Flag Sr., played by Frank Grillo, visits Belle Reve and meets Hoult's character Luthor. He asks him to help him find Chris/Peacemaker's dimensional portal. He makes a deal with the criminal that if he helps him find the portal, he will shift him from Belle Reve to Van Kull prison, where he won't find metahumans.
According to Gunn, the moment is one of the crucial moments for the future of DCU's two supervillains, who strike a deal to work together, which will probably be dangerous for John Cena's Peacemaker. In the Deadline interview, he further said:
"[Flag] teamed up with Lex Luthor, which is scary, a man with such power as Flag. He’s got an agenda, it’s scary for our boy Peacemaker."
Therefore, Flag and Luthor coming together against Chris will surely bring bigger problems for him since Gunn has already shared that Flag has an "agenda". Peacemaker Season 2 has only left two episodes, and this new development will bring more intriguing turns of events for the upcoming episodes.
Peacemaker Season 2: James Gunn talks about Nicholas Hoult's performance in the superhero series
Other than talking about the crucial role Hoult's character Luthor plays in Peacemaker Season 2, James Gunn also shared in the Deadline interview how the actor's performance was different in the series than in the Superman film, even though the scene was filmed during the filming of the superhero movie. He shared:
"This was one of the first scenes we shot. I think we shot it in the middle of Superman. It was cool, it was weird because tonally, it instantly felt different from Superman, which is so big and brash. And this show is so grounded and gritty. And then also hearing Nick curse."
He further added:
"I felt like even Nick’s performance was different."
After the premiere episode of Season 2, several fans speculated that Lex Luthor would definitely appear in the series due to Belle Reve being mentioned in the episode. Therefore, seeing Hoult appear as Luthor in the latest episode, and that too in a crucial role that is important for not just the series but also the whole DCU, has left the fans excited and anticipating more.
Besides John Cena, Season 2 also stars Danielle Brooks, Jennifer Holland, Steve Agee, Robert Patrick, and Freddie Stroma, among several others.
