The Rainmaker premiered with an explosive Episode 1, where the rookie attorney, Rudy Baylor, had the worst day. Adapted from John Grisham’s novel, Rudy found himself in numerous dire situations, from fistfights, being late on the first day of a new job, to being fired from the said job.
One might think his being late on the first day of his job might be the reason behind his getting fired. However, that did not seem to be the case, as Rudy found himself in an argument with his new boss, Leo Drummond, at Tinley Britt Law Firm, on the topic of equal rights. This resulted in him getting fired by Leo.
Before joining Bruiser’s law firm, Rudy had to go through several rejections from good law firms that refused to hire him.

Why does Rudy Baylor get fired in The Rainmaker Episode 1? Here's what we know
Rudy Baylor came from a background where he had to work hard to get to where he was. However, his troubles have not ended, as we encountered in The Rainmaker Episode 1. Before leaving for his job at Tinley Britt, Rudy got into an argument with Hank, his mother’s boyfriend, who asked her to move on from John, Rudy’s brother’s death, and give his room to him to build a gym for himself.
The argument became physical, and Rudy had to go to his job with a busted lip and blood on his suit, as he did not have another one. In addition, he reached the orientation program late, catching Leo’s attention. He then asked Rudy to tell him about instances where domestic violence victims were not treated equally.
Rudy based his answer on facts that no one could deny. However, this bold move and his confident demeanor ended up annoying his new boss, who fired him on Rudy’s first day. His conviction toward justice and his knowledge might be the reason Leo could not stand him, as we later see that he isn’t actually a good person.
For instance, when Sarah, Rudy’s girlfriend, tries to convince Leo to hire Rudy back, he refuses, and to establish the power dynamic, he makes her pick up fries that he throws on the floor.
More on The Rainmaker
Tinley Britt might have fired Rudy Baylor in The Rainmaker Episode 1, but they have not gotten rid of the enthusiastic attorney. He is later hired by Bruiser’s law firm, where he becomes the rainmaker and brings his first case.
Rudy’s first case is Dot Black suing one of Tinley Britt’s clients, the North City General Hospital. Black is suing the hospital for the death of her son, Donny Ray, who died in the hospital after being admitted for the flu. Rudy had sensed that the case had more hidden pieces to be solved.
To fight for justice and his anger toward Tinley Britt, Rudy has jumped into the playing field, where he might also not get away without being harmed, as Sarah has been appointed to represent North City. Further, by taking Dot Black’s case, Rudy might have also thrust himself into a bigger conspiracy than he had thought, as Black is being spied upon by someone unknown.
The Rainmaker airs on USA Network and is later available to stream on Peacock.
