Boston Blue has debuted on CBS and has already started filling the void left by Blue Bloods. The show follows Danny Reagan from the original series as he moves to Boston and teams up with Detective Lena Silver, who also comes from a police family like his.

From the beginning, Donnie Wahlberg was confirmed to reprise his role as Danny in the spin-off. However, fans were surprised to see that two more characters from the original show, Maria and Erin, made guest appearances in Boston Blue episode 1.

Anthony Hemingway, who directed the premiere, has now talked about whether there will be more Blue Bloods cameos in the spin-off. In a recent interview, the director and executive producer stated that the team is already figuring out ways to bring back more characters from the original procedural drama.

In Boston Blue Episode 1, Faith and Family, Marisa Ramirez shows up as Danny’s love interest, Maria Baez. She is seen with Danny just before he leaves for Boston. Later in the episode, Danny’s sister, Erin Reagan, played by Bridget Moynahan, also makes an appearance as she goes to Boston to check up on her brother and nephew.

Fans are now left excited with these two Blue Bloods cameos and are hoping for more characters to make guest appearances, including Frank, Henry Reagan, and Jamie Reagan. Talking about the possibility of bringing other Blue Bloods characters into the new show, director Anthony Hemingway said in an interview with Deadline:

“With my executive producer hat on, let me say, the plan and concept, without spoiling anything, is to continue to find ways on intersecting and bringing back some of those beloved characters.”

Hemingway further teased that he can not say much about bringing back Blue Bloods characters, but the spin-off is certainly going to feature some elements of the original show that will be liked by fans:

“As for more Reagans, I don’t want to spoil everything for everyone, but there is definitely elements of Blue Bloods coming in Boston Blue that will satisfy, I think, the hardcore fans of the original series.”

Meanwhile, apart from the already established fan-favorite characters, Boston Blue also features a slew of fresh faces who have brought new energy to the franchise. These include Sonequa Martin-Green as Lena Silver, Marcus Scribner as Jonah Silver, Gloria Reuben as Mae Silver, Maggie Lawson as Sarah Silver, and Ernie Hudson as Reverend Edwin Peters.

On the other hand, Mika Amonsen is taking over the role of Sean Reagan, replacing Andrew Terraciano from the previous show. Talking about how the spin-off is going to explore a new dimension of Danny’s personality, Hemingway said:

“With his son Sean in the force, Sonequa as his new partner, we get to really see layers that he didn’t get to do on Blue Bloods – the vulnerability the human, and the father Danny Reagan is in this world.”

Boston Blue airs new episodes on CBS on Fridays.
