DC Studios Co CEO James Gunn addressed the Flash's presence in the DCU through the sixth episode of Peacemaker: The Official Podcast with James Gunn. In that episode, he is explicitly asked whether Wonder Woman and DC's beloved speedster are active in the DCU. It should be noted that both characters were active in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) and even appeared in the Peacemaker Season 1 finale.

However, we also know that even if most of Peacemaker Season 1 is canonical to the DCU, like the butterfly invasion, and Christopher Smith's regret over killing Rick Flag Jr., the Justice League cameo, including the Flash and Aquaman, played by Ezra Miller and Jason Momoa, respectively, is no longer canon. Thus, in the new version of Peacemaker Season 1 continuity, it seems that the Justice League scene may play out differently if Gunn's comments are to be believed.

What did James Gunn say about the Flash?

As mentioned before, Gunn addressed the status of Wonder Woman and the speedster during the latest episode of Peacemaker: The Official Podcast with James Gunn, in which they rewatched the sixth episode of the first season, "Murn After Reading". There, the hosts, James Gunn and Steve Agee, addressed the canonical status of Justice League. First, Agee said:

"Wonder Woman and Flash are mentioned in [Peacemaker’s classroom scene in Season 1, Episode 6] by the kids."

To this, James Gunn responded:

"Yeah, are they canon? I don’t know. We’ll have to wait and see. I mean, they’ll exist eventually. Whether they exist now, I don’t know."

These words might confuse some, but it should be noted that James Gunn has been outspoken that while most of Peacemaker Season 1 is canon, the Justice League cameo from the season 1 finale would be explained in the second season. In November 2024, James Gunn told IGN:

“The truth is almost all of Peacemaker is canon with the exception of Justice League… which we will kind of deal with in the next season of Peacemaker.”

Now, recent rumors have suggested Peacemaker Season 2 would begin with a recap, which would reveal that the butterfly invasion from season 1 did happen, with one change: the 11th Street Kids encounter the Justice Gang instead of the Justice League. The Justice Gang consists of Superman, Mister Terrific, Green Lantern (Guy Gardner), Supergirl, and Hawkgirl.

Of these five, all heroes except for Green Lantern and Hawkgirl are in shadows, as the teaser confirmed that Nathan Fillion and Isabela Merced are a part of Peacemaker Season 2. This means that the Flash's status, much like Aquaman's status on the DCU for now, remains unconfirmed.

However, we know that the speedster can't stay off-screen for long, as we know that the Flash is one of the many dead heroes who is seen in Circe's dystopian vision.

Therefore, for now, all we have to do is wait and let things play out as they do. While DC's speedsters may not have as high adaptations as Superman and Batman, he does have a live-action CW series that ran for nine seasons between 2014 and 2023.
