Looks like one actor from HBO’s Lanterns has completed their portion of the series. The actor in question is none other than Ulrich Thomsen, who is playing the role of the Green Lantern antagonist Sinestro. Thomsen himself confirmed that he has finished his part of the HBO series through an Instagram post on July 30, 2025. This suggests that the series might soon be nearing completion.

Thomsen joined the cast of HBO’s Lanterns in January this year, and cameras started rolling in February. Since then, the cast and creators have hyped up the script, making fans excited. While some hoped to learn more about the show at SDCC two weeks ago, it looks like they’ll have to wait a while longer.

The caption of Thomsen’s post has some wondering whether Sinestro will appear in other DCU projects. For his part, Thomsen seems to hint that he will return. But as of now, it can’t be confirmed if he is returning or not.

What does Lanterns' Ulrich Thomsen's caption mean?

As mentioned earlier, Thomsen posted an image on his Instagram handle with a half-shaven moustache. The moustache seen in the image is the same one Sinestro will be seen sporting in Lanterns. Thus, we now partially know what Sinestro will look like in the series. Just imagine redder skin, and that’s what Ulrich Thomsen's character will look like in the eight-episode HBO series. The caption read:

"Bye for now Sinestro - I’ll keep one side for later. Hope to see you again."

This caption seems to hint that he hopes to return to the DCU after the HBO series. But it won’t be until Lanterns concludes that we’ll learn whether Thomsen’s version of Sinestro will appear in the DCU again.

What do we know about the HBO series?

The series is said to be inspired by another HBO hit, True Detective, in which two detectives investigate a murder in a small American town. Last month, James Gunn revealed who the protagonist of the HBO series will be in an interview with CBS Mornings:

“We go into Supergirl and Lanterns next summer. It’s basically John Stewart’s story in a lot of ways, but with those other characters.”

James Gunn’s words are sure to make millennials happy, as John Stewart was the Green Lantern they grew up with. Moreover, it is known that the show will be darker and geared towards adults, much like True Detective. This suggests that DC Studios is open to more R-rated projects, which are rare in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Aside from its rating, HBO executive Casey Bloys hyped the series last month, saying:

"If there’s wood, I’m going to knock on it, because I’m superstitious, so I’ll just say I feel good about it. I’m not sure with the Emmy window where it falls, but in whatever window it falls in, I do believe it’ll be an Emmy contender."

As of now, Lanterns doesn’t have an official release date, but it is expected to be released in early 2026.
