The events of X-Men '97 Season 2 were set up in the season 1 finale of the animated series. After defeating Bastion, the X-Men are lost to the time stream. Scott and Jean are transported to 3960 CE, which is an apocalyptic future where they discover a clan led by the mysterious Mother Askani, who might be none other than Rachel Anne Summers, Scott Summers, and Jean Grey's daughter from an alternate future.

Charles Xavier, Magneto, Rogue, Beast, and Nightcrawler, on the other hand, are transported back to Ancient Egypt in 3000 BCE. There, they encounter a masked figure fighting some soldiers. The masked figure is revealed to be one of the first mutants in the X-Men lore, Apocalypse/En Sabah Nur, setting the stage for X-Men '97 Season 2.

That moment had many fans believe that the second season of the beloved animated series would explore Apocalypse's backstory. Early this month, actor Ross Marquand confirmed that fans can expect to see En Sabah Nur's transformation into Apocalypse play out in the second season of X-Men '97.

What did Ross Marquand say about En Sabah Nur's role in X-Men '97 Season 2?

ScreenRant interviewed actor Ross Marquand, who voices Professor X/Charles Xavier, early this month. Marquand, who was there to promote his sci-fi thriller Descendent, was asked what we can expect from X-Men '97 Season 2. To this, Marquand revealed to the ScreenRant reporter that, in addition to voicing Professor X, he will also be voicing En Sabah Nur.

Marquand probably will be voicing just the past version of En Sabah Nur, while someone may voice Apocalypse in the present. The actor revealed to the journalist that X-Men '97 Season 2 will make fans and viewers look at Apocalypse differently. The actor's exact words were:

"I can't say much obviously, because Disney will shoot me to death. But I can say that I play Apocalypse in the next season, as well. There's a really wonderful back and forth between Xavier and Apocalypse in several scenes. I think people are really going to look at the character of Apocalypse in a way that they never have before. And certainly, as a viewer of the original series from when I was a kid, I'm very excited to dive into the psychosis and the basic trauma of what made En Sabah Nur turn into Apocalypse. It's a really interesting journey, I think people are gonna love it."

Thus, it is safe to assume that fans may learn more about this version of Apocalypse, who is three decades old at this point. This has fans excited for the second season, which, as of now, does not have a release date. However, we know that season 2 does have a 2026 release window.

This was confirmed by Brad Winderbaum, the Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation at Marvel Studios, in a February 2025 Collider interview:

"Season 2 of X-Men ‘97 is going to be in ‘26. We're working on it now. It's exciting. That world of the ‘90s is just… Honestly, Steve, I can't believe they let me make it. I grew up at Marvel, as you know, clocked a lot of time here, and I feel like I used a lot of currency to revive this thing that I loved watching after school. So, the fact that we get to play in that universe with those actors is honestly why I went into this business in the first place."

As we wait for X-Men '97 Season 2, the entire first season and the original animated series are available to stream on Disney+.
