Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2 is still almost a year away. One of the most exciting characters that people are looking forward to meeting in the upcoming second season is that of Toph Beifong, played by Miya Cech in the live-action series. For those who don't know, Toph is an Earthbending master who is just a kid. Even more impressive, she is visually challenged.
Introduced in the second season of the original animated series, we even see her create a new form of bending: metal bending. However, despite her impressive feats, Toph has her flaws. As she starts training Aang in the beginning, she doesn't join the others in chores. This aspect particularly gets inside Katara's bones. However, they grow closer over time.
Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2, if it sticks to the source material, will adapt this storyline. However, for now, it hasn't been confirmed whether the live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2 will show this evolution or not.
Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2 has made changes to Toph's character:
A topic of contention amongst the fans is that the Toph Beifong that the fans will meet in Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2 is slightly older. In the original animated series, Toph is a young child, like Aang, Katara, and Sokka. Therefore, her behavior in the original animated show makes sense. However, we know that the version of Toph played by the 18-year-old Miya Cech will be slightly older.
Cech herself confirmed this change in December 2024 in an interview with Pacific Rim Video Press:
“She’s a little bit older so she’s not a little kid anymore. She is still that same spitfire, spunky character who gets to call a certain character ‘Twinkle Toes’. I think there are going to be a lot of things that the fans are going to remember from the animated series and a lot of things that are brand new.”
This means that the people involved in the live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2 will have to make some changes to this storyline from the second season of the original animated show.
What do we know about the live-action Avatar series?
Almost two weeks after the release of the first season on February 22, 2025, Netflix officially announced that the series has been renewed for seasons 2 and 3, ensuring that this version of the story will see its conclusion. Currently, the second season has wrapped up production, and the team is working on season 3. Actor Daniel Dae Kim spoke about it in a panel at SDCC this year:
"We're in the first block of Season 3, and what I can say about the show is that each season grows in scale. If you thought Season 1 was big, wait till you see Season 3, because there is a change in the way we are shooting Seasons 2 and 3 that will make the show very different."
Then praising his young co-stars, Kim said:
"What's been really cool about being part of the cast is watching these young actors grow from Episode 1 to now. What they've learned in terms of their technique and what they've learned about who they are has been really nice to watch. You hear so many stories about young actors being changed in a negative way by this business. But there's something about the environment of that show where I really feel like these young actors are being nurtured, and I really can't wait to see what they do, not just for Seasons 2 and 3 of our show, but beyond in their careers."
As we wait for Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2, the entire first season is streaming on Netflix.
