The first-of-its-kind music competition, Building the Band, is in full swing, as six newly formed music groups, born from blind auditions, compete for a shot at stardom. Solo performers initially sang from isolated sound booths, forming connections purely through voice.

Now, the 19 remaining contestants have transitioned into officially locked-in bands, living and rehearsing together as they prepare for live performances. Episode 7 marked a pivotal moment for trio 3QUENCY, whose rendition of Made for Me by Muni Long earned high praise from judge Nicole Scherzinger. In her onstage feedback, Nicole said,

“This is what Building the Band is all about right here. It’s that unspoken chemistry and connection, but the love and the passion y’all share — y’all are stronger together.”

3QUENCY's journey on Building the Band

From the early stages of Building the Band, 3QUENCY positioned itself as more than just a group; it sought to form a sisterhood. Their story began during the blind audition process when Wennely and Brianna discovered that they had previously crossed paths nearly a decade ago at an audition.

Reuniting through sound booths, they quickly reignited their mutual dream of pursuing music as a career. Wennely’s conversation with Nori followed, and the two immediately found common ground, even dancing to the 'Cha Cha Slide' in their respective booths.

Wennely then introduced Brianna to Nori, and all three discussed their desire to express their individuality through music while performing as a cohesive unit. Although the trio briefly connected with another contestant, Bri, they ultimately decided that three was their magic number, officially establishing 3QUENCY as the third band of the season.

Their debut performance took place at the start of Episode 4, where they sang Levitating by Dua Lipa. Judge Nicole Scherzinger observed the group from backstage and praised their ability to make real-time adjustments and harmonize effectively.

By Episode 6, they had gained further momentum with their performance of SZA’s Kill Bill, showcasing emotional intensity and vocal control. Episode 7 saw them deliver Made for Me by Muni Long, leading Nicole to compliment their performance.

How other bands are stacking up

While 3QUENCY made an impact, other bands in Building the Band also progressed significantly. SZN 4, composed of Donzell, Aaliyah, Cameron, and Katie, became the first official band by the end of Episode 2.

Their debut performance of Too Sweet by Hozier established their genre-blending style rooted in R&B, soul, and pop. Nicole described them as “the perfect ingredients” after their performance. Known for their hard work, Aaliyah’s comment during Episode 6,

“We’re not gonna go to bed until it’s perfect."

Soulidified formed in Episode 3 with members Landon, Malik, Shade, and Bradley. Their debut of Finesse by Bruno Mars displayed natural stage presence. Nicole praised them as an example of artist-led collaboration. By Episode 7, their performance of Sure Thing by Miguel was called out by judge Liam Payne for fully owning the stage.

Midnight ’Til Morning, led by Zach and Mason, was locked in by Episode 4 of Building the Band with Conor and Shane. Despite initial struggles, including personal distractions, their performance of Ocean Eyes by Billie Eilish showed growth. Episode 7’s Iris by Goo Goo Dolls left them in the bottom two, raising questions about their cohesion.

Siren Society, an all-female band formed in Episode 4, included Erica, Jenna, Noriella, and Autumn. Their early performance of Want to Want Me by Jason Derulo received vocal praise. However, riskier performances such as Don’t Cha by the Pussycat Dolls led to a dip in votes, and they ended Episode 7 in the bottom two alongside Midnight ’Til Morning.

Sweet Seduction, a trio formed by Alison, Elise, and Haley, struggled with group identity early on. Nicole reminded them during rehearsals that they were a band, not soloists, after noticing mismatched appearances.

Despite internal challenges, their performances of I Want It That Way by the Backstreet Boys and Emotions by Mariah Carey demonstrated vocal power and earned them a spot in the next round.
