On Beyond the Gates, Jacob's investigation into Leslie Thomas has ground to a halt. Why isn't the evidence they have enough to get that woman off the streets and locked up?

If you have watched any good police or crime drama (CSI or NCIS on CBS), then you will know that there are certain requirements for the evidence before it is considered enough to take to the District Attorney. The DA will decide if there is enough evidence to go ahead and prosecute and take the case before a Judge and jury. Most DAs won't take the risk of prosecuting without the required evidence, as the defense attorneys will tear a case apart, and the offender, even if guilty, will get to go free. This is exactly what Jacob (Jibre Hordges) is worried about and is trying to explain to Kat (Colby Muhammed).

What evidence do we have

If you ask Kat, there is enough to put Leslie (Trisha Mann-Grant) on death row, LOL, but Jacob isn’t convinced. He is frustrated, but he knows how the law works; it’s not what you know, but what you can prove in court. Let’s break down what team Jacob has: a leather jacket, a motorcycle helmet, and gloves, Leslie's DNA sample, and some footage of a rider wearing identical clothing. Slam dunk? Nope, not even close. The footage only shows an unnamed rider wearing identical motorcycle attire to what Leslie owns. The DNA sample only proves that Leslie wore the jacket at some point. None of this puts Leslie, wearing all three items, on any motorcycle at the crime scene where Laura (Destiny Love) was forced off the road. It’s just not enough.

What evidence is needed?

Finding the motorcycle would be a great piece of evidence that could then be matched to the one in the footage, and the ownership could be traced. It still doesn't put Leslie at the crime scene. If the vehicle and the motorcycle had any sort of contact, then there would be damage, scrapes, and paint traces that could then be matched and put the motorcycle at the crime scene. With the footage, they can ascertain the rider's height, so they could say someone of Leslie's height rode it and forced the car off the road, but that STILL doesn't put Leslie there. A witness, tire tread marks taken from the scene, would all help, but in lieu of a confession from Leslie, this will be an uphill battle. Jacob’s best bet is to keep at it and see if anything comes of the incident where Laura was potentially poisoned, and try to link that to Leslie. The alternative is waiting for Leslie to slip up and hoping there is something damning in what she does. For now, Leslie is frustratingly just out of reach, even from the long arm of the law.

You can watch Beyond the Gates weekdays on CBS or stream live or on-demand on Paramount Plus.
