Romance and family are the hallmarks of daytime dramas. The Young and the Restless has always kept this uppermost in its mind. This past week, the show truly dug deep into romance by having Danny Romalotti propose marriage to Christine Williams. The event gave us all the feels and was a throwback to the show's olden days.

The Young and the Restless, Romance, Romance, Romance

The show pulled out all the stops to commemorate this overdue moment. Danny arranged for Society to be empty so that he and Christine could be alone for the big occasion.

Longtime Y&R fans know that Danny and Chris never should have broken up. Danny sent Chris word that they were done via an overnight letter (remember those? They’re still around, but today, he’d have probably sent a text or done a status change on social media!) Chris soon learned that the reason Danny had ended things was because he’d impregnated another woman (Phyllis) while he was in New York performing in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s production of Joseph and His Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat on Broadway.

It took about four years, but eventually, Phyllis’s machinations were exposed. It turned out that she’d lied and Danny had never slept with her, and he wasn’t Daniel’s birth father. Despite this, Danny and Chris did not reconcile! She had moved on to a life with Paul Williams, and Danny left town to go on tour.

There’d been sporadic returns and reunions over the years, but Danny and Chris, now split from Paul, didn’t get serious again until last year. Slowly, but surely, the two began reconnecting. She ended up joining him on his tour, and a short while ago, Danny confided in Daniel that he was going to propose to Christine again.

It wasn’t just Daniel who knew, but the audience did, too. There’s something about the audience knowing that something is coming before a character (in this case, Christine) does that builds the anticipation.

Memory lane

But Danny had cooked up plenty of surprises that made the proposal truly magical. He built the anticipation to popping the question by showing Chris mementos from their past – a hammer, a guitar clip, the etiquette book they used to help teach their pal Nina how to become worthy of Phillip’s wife, and more.

Soap fans are lifelong viewers. Kudos to Y&R for doing its research. The clips showing just how long Chris and Danny go back were a treat! Clips from past shows can be expensive, but they’re worth every penny for longtime devotees. There was another sentimental nice touch that didn’t cost a penny, and that was Danny referring to Christine as “Cricket,” the nickname she used as a teen and young adult. She switched over to using Christine when she got into law, but to Danny, Nina, and many others, Chris will always be “Cricket.”

Vive La Genoa City!

The show continues to shift between France and Genoa City. Nice has been nice, but it’s time to wrap up and get back to Genoa City. Heck, even Cane, the host of the big event over in France, has popped back into town for a quick visit.

The show’s model right now is to have between 7 and 10 characters per episode. So, even though some entire core families (nearly) are over in France, we don’t get to see everyone at the same time. If we’re watching Nick and Sharon, then Jack and Diane are in their train cabin, resting, for example. Sure, there were a few big group scenes when Cane revealed himself as Dumas, but ever since then, the characters have been spending time apart.

The Genoa City citizens have been there so long that nobody should be getting lost in the maze of shrubbery any longer! Also, we know we’re probably not going to see it at this point, but it’s been odd not getting a look inside Cane’s chateau. The Newmans, Abbotts, Devon, and other guests need to re-read their invitations. Did the invites say they would have to stay in their train cabin cars the whole time?

Vicki, Claire, and clairity

Vicki and Claire being alone back in Genoa City when Cole died was nothing anyone could have planned. He wasn’t that sick when the Newmans left town. However, if Nikki, Victor, and Nick knew that Victoria was going to need them, they might never have gone.

Fortunately, Chelsea stopped by to check in with Victoria and was able to provide her with some much-needed support. Vicki broke down and began to accept that Cole was gone and he was never coming back. She had us in tears for the second week in a row. Vicki not having her family (except for Claire, Johnny, and Katie, who were off-screen – and probably shouldn’t be as they knew Cole, too) made her pain all the more potent. Can the Newmans get home fast and give Victoria and Claire a few hundred hugs?

Second chances

Y&R has carefully laid out the Cane/Lily/Damian triangle. It’s hard to believe that Cane’s former employee, Damian, just happens to be the half-brother of Lily’s cousin, Nate. But soaps are filled with such coincidences. It must be frustrating for Cane that he’s done all he has over the last several years to rewin Lily’s love, only to see her take up with his ex-employee.

Cane may want to rethink his plan to take over Genoa City and all the businesses. Will that truly get Lily back into his life? Does Lily have true feelings for Damian, or is she using him to push away her feelings for Cane?

Kyle's conundrum

Kyle, Kyle, Kyle! What are we going to do with you? Despite his mother Diane pointing out to him that he’s playing with fire, Kyle seems to have no problem hanging out with a scantily clad Audra in her train cabin! He’s playing right into Victor’s hands! Audra claimed that the lingerie she was wearing while lounging around her room was more than she’d wear out by the pool. She noted that there was little difference. Um, yeah, there is. And if Kyle can’t see it, he may find himself out $5 million, and he also will have to leave town.

Maybe, if Kyle reneges on his deal, he can pledge the money to Victor and not fork it over. He’d need the help of some good Genoa City attorneys like Michael and Christine to help him wiggle out of his contract.

Kyle’s not the only person who’s playing with fire in France. Billy stands to get burned if he allies himself with Cane – at least, that’s how Jack feels. And he’s probably right! No one knows you like family, so Jack’s furious dressing down of Billy was as spot-on as it was dramatic and powerful. Jack was incredulous that Billy was going to hand over the running of Abbott Communications to Sally (despite her qualifications) so that he could team up with Cane to go after Victor to get Chancellor Industries back.

Speaking of the whole Chancellor Industries/Victor/Nikki/Billy story, we have to say that Jill’s absence from this tale is glaring. We’ll take more Jill anyway we can get her back, whether it’s by video conference call or, better yet, in person. As far as Billy’s concerned, Jill played a big role in his current motivations. Perhaps Jack could use some backup in trying to drill some sense into Billy’s head?

When they’re done, they can work on Kyle. WHAT is he thinking by going into Audra’s train cabin and closing the door behind them? We have to agree with Diane and Cane. Sure, there may be something of value in exploring a Jabot v. Vibrante perfume war, but what does Jabot get out of it? At the least, the company stands to give Audra’s company some free publicity. At the worst, Kyle will succumb to Audra, he’ll be out $5 million, and he’ll have to leave town!

Friends and lovers

However, we could see a twist coming. What if Claire ends up breaking Kyle’s heart? Holden isn’t the best espionage agent in Genoa City, given how easily Chelsea connected Cane with Holden. But he does seem to be a very, very nice guy. What if Claire falls for him, and she ends up hurting Kyle?

Is there a clause in Kyle’s deal with Victor that protects him if Claire ends up falling out of love with Kyle, breaking his heart in the process? If Kyle were free, got to stay in town, and got to keep his $5 million, then he’d be open for a whole host of new storylines.
