What happened on The Young and the Restless

With cell phone service finally restored, Kyle called Claire. He updated her on Dumas being Cane. Claire told Kyle that Cole had died. She said they were going to have a small funeral service today, but she’d hold off if they were all coming home. Claire and Kyle told each other that they loved one another. Victoria entered and said she’d just spoken to Victor and Nikki. Vicki said she was glad that her brother was okay.
Vicki said she told Nikki about Cole. She assured Victor and Nikki that she understood. Vicki added that Nikki said they should do what they think is best, regarding Cole. Victoria told her daughter that today could be about them saying goodbye.
Nate showed up in a suit, ready to go to Cole’s funeral. Vicki decided the service could wait until their family returned from France. Nate took a call from Lily. He told her he knew about Dumas being Cane. Lily said she was okay with that, but she then told Nate that Damian was gone. “He was killed,” Lily said.
Lily added that Damian was murdered by Cane’s troubled assistant out of some distorted sense of loyalty to his boss. Lily added that Carter thought Damian was a romantic threat. Nate wondered how that was possible. Lily said she grew to realize what an amazing man Damian was. She said that she and Damian became romantically involved. That’s why Carter got rid of him. Nate asked if Carter was doing Cane’s bidding. Lily said no, and that she believed him. Lily said that Carter shot himself. She said she hated telling Nate like this.
Nate realized that Amy had just gotten her son back, and now, he was gone. Lily cried that this shouldn’t have happened. Nate told her to get home safe and disconnected the call. Nate came back inside the tack house and informed Claire and Victoria that Damian was dead. Vicki hugged Nate. Vicki told Nate that his years in medicine may have prepared him to tell Amy the unthinkable. Nate says this is different as it’s his family. Vicki placed a supportive hand on Nate’s arm.
Meanwhile, Cane sat alone in his monitor room. He played back in his mind the gunshot that took Chance’s life. Amanda entered to check on Cane. He lamented not knowing how unstable Carter was. Amanda said she came from the police, and they told her that the investigation had concluded. Cane was in the clear. They saw Carter’s confession that he killed Damian on Cane's security tapes. Amanda confirmed the police bought Cane’s lies about the cell service being interrupted. Amanda said she’d hoped it was okay that she had reactivated the service. Amanda told Cane he was in the clear. “Am I?” Cane asked.
Cane wondered how he could tell Jill what happened. He pointed out that Jill had been more of a mother to him than his birth mother had been. Cane feared he had somehow encouraged Carter. Amanda said Carter asked on his own. She asked Cane if his crime was trusting Carter too much. Cane said he should have seen a sign. He lamented not being more vigilant. Amanda reminded Cane that he gave Carter a purpose. Cane said Carter was dead, along with two innocent men – Chance and Damian. Cane added that on top of the loss of life that Nick was in the hospital. Amanda urged Cane to think ahead.
Amanda wondered if Cane wanted to go ahead with his original plan. She pointed out that he has gained more enemies than friends. Cane said he’s not backing down from his vision. Amanda asked if this was about Lily. Cane said everything was about Lily. Cane said he’d find a way to break down the walls that were up. Cane observed that Nikki came to Amanda with the idea of selling Chancellor. Amanda said that was only because Cane was holding Nick a prisoner. Cane noted that Nikki was still ready to sign. Amanda pointed out that she never could have done that if Cane hadn’t drawn up the papers ready for Nikki to sign. Cane said he wasn’t worried. He told Amanda that they could do amazing things together, but if she wanted to walk away, he would understand. “I’ll stay,” Amanda responded. After Amanda left, Cole used his arms to slide everything off his desk in a fit of frustration.
Meanwhile, Jack, Diane, Billy, and Phyllis recapped the horrific events of their journey to Cane’s chateau, including Damian's and Chance’s deaths. Phyllis and Billy defended Cane. They said he wasn’t to blame for what had gone on, but Jack disagreed. Jack said Chance and Damian’s deaths were on Cane’s head. Phyllis said it was a stretch to pin all that happened on Cane. Jack pointed out that Nina and Jill will be devastated by Chance’s loss. Billy agreed but said his brother would find a way to blame him for it.
Billy refused to take credit for any heroics. He called Chance a hero. Billy said he’d need to talk to Cane first before calling Jill. He felt that Jill wouldn’t pick up the phone if she knew Billy was calling. Diane was just glad they could leave. Then, Audra entered. Diane tersely informed her that if she were looking for Kyle, her son was not there. Audra wasn’t interested in a lecture from Diane. Sally offered to make Audra a drink. They agreed to catch up, but that this wasn't the time or place. Jack found Cane’s welcome note that read “wait and hope.” Diane observed that they still don’t know what Cane’s agenda is.
Kyle caught up with his parents and told them Cole had died. He lamented going on the trip with his parents as Claire needed him. Meanwhile, Billy asked Phyllis if she was okay and if she thought about being partners again in business. Phyllis pointed out that Billy screwed her over twice. Jack asked the two what they were talking about. Both Billy and Jack agreed that things need to change once they’re back in Genoa City. Phyllis asked Billy what was going on and what would be happening. Billy suggested that they all just get home safe, and then, they could talk about the future.
Audra told Sally that they needed to catch up, but not right now. Kyle and Audra bumped into each other. Kyle blamed Audra for his being there when Cole died and when Claire needed him the most. Audra said she was sorry, but that this was Kyle’s choice. She told him he kissed her back. Kyle prayed he got a front row seat to watch Victor lower the boom on Audra. He doesn’t care much for failure.
Cane entered Lily’s cabin. He asked her if he could do anything for her. She said he’d done enough. Cane said that the deaths of Chance, Damian, and even Carter will haunt him. “Good!” Lily said. Cane said he’s thought of what facing Jill and Nina would be like. Cane said he’d try to make this right. Lily was incredulous that Cane was considering going back to Genoa City. Lily pointed out that Cane has caused nothing but tragedy.
Cane said he was sorry that he felt that way. He wondered if Lily would let him prove himself. Lily recounted Cane’s lies. She wanted to know why she would ever believe anything ever again. Cane said he’d like to talk to Lily about how he spent time with his father. Lily said there was nothing that Cane could say that would make her think that he’d changed.
Cane told Lily he refused to believe that what they had was gone. Lily said Cane only has himself to blame for what they had all gone through. Then, Lily heard a train whistle and said goodbye to Cane. She urged him not to come back to Genoa City. “Until we meet again, Lily,” Cane said as he left.
